The Oldies Music Board » Steve Miller Shares the Stories Behind His Greatest Hits » September 16, 2023 12:47 pm |
Thanks for that, I'll check out the album. I'm a big Steve Miller fan and I had the good fortune to meet him at a press gathering before his Toronto show in the fall of '77. I read that he was an avid flatfish angler so I bought him a flatfish lure and, being a bit of an artsy, I painted on it a replica of the mask from "The Joker' album cover. He liked it. I reviewed his show and titled the piece "The King Is Dead, Long Live The King".

The only song I recall hearing on the radio around these parts was "So You Are A Star", which owed more than a little to The Beatles. It seems fitting that Mark Hudson became a co-writer, producer and musical road director for Ringo Starr for about 10 years, into the mid-2000's.
The Oldies Music Board » CCR's John Fogerty Opens Up About "Bathrooms, Woodstock & More » August 28, 2023 9:05 am |
Just a couple of points of clarification, the writer says "After CCR's contentious breakup in the early 1970s for financial reasons, Fogerty left behind bandmates Doug Clifford (drums), Stu Cook (bass guitar) and his own late brother, Tom (rhythm guitar),".
John didn't leave brother Tom behind, as he had already left the band before their final album "Mardi Gras". A little nit-picky maybe, but it could have been made clearer. Also, I hardly think the band broke up for financial reasons as they were doing quite well at the time. What really broke them up was the fact the bass player and drummer, who were mediocre songwriters and singers at best, fought Fogerty for equal time on "Mardi Gras". That's why that record was such a stinker and Fogerty decided to pack the band in.
Finally, I'm not sure why Forbes is bragging about landing an interview with a performer who rarely grants same. I've talked to him a couple of times over the years so he's not that inaccessible.

I read the Wikipedia entries for both Noble and The Horse and I have two queries. First, "The Horse" is an instrumental version of the 45's A-Side "Love Is All Right", so why didn't the B-Side have the same title? The A-Side is credited to Cliff Nobles, so why isn't the B-Side just credited to The Company since Cliff wasn't on the recording. One other observation, Cliff tried to cash in on the single's success by putting out another song called "Pony The Horse", but that one went directly to the glue factory.
The Oldies Music Board » Jon & Robin » August 12, 2023 10:46 am |
I was going through the new release section of Allmusic and came across this new singles comp by Jon & Robin. While they only had a couple of charting songs that I remember, "Dr. Jon" and particularly "Do It Again (Just A Little Bit Slower)", were great radio fodder. I read up on them a bit and after leaving the music biz, Jon Abdnor Junior apparently lost his mind and was charged with the murder of his Texas girlfriend. He passed away in 2008. Javonne "Robin" Braga also quit music, and she's still around and can be found on Facebook.

Thanks for that. I sent a note to the Toronto library to see if they can order a few copies. About 10 years ago, the other lead Turtle, Howard Kaylan, wrote a bio called 'Shell Shocked'. Apparently it dealt primarily with his sordid affairs, and hopefully Mark's book will be more about the music.

This was my second chat with Ian, the first being in 1995 when he was promoting Tull's "Roots To Branches" album. Regarding the umlaut, I mentioned to him that my name is of German origin (Mütz) and that I have a dandy recipe for wiener schnitzel. He said that was his wife's favourite dish so I invited them for dinner the next time Tull comes through Toronto.

I really like "Hold Me Tight" and I also like "Last Train to Clarksville", but I had never heard about this. So I did a search, and the best that I could come up with was a Spanish-language site at that Google translates as saying:
As Paco points out in the section of this website intended to suggest similarities between songs, "Hold Me Tight" by Johnny Nash is reminiscent of "Last Train to Clarksville" by The Monkees.
So I'd be interested in any further details about this if they're available. I do remember, many years ago, hearing an announcer comment on Andy KIm's "Rainbow Ride" having a bit of a similarity to "Last Train to Clarksville". But I don't believe that this was enough to lead to any legal action.
I was going from memory, and a pretty old memory, which is always a dangerous thing. I tried to find an online version of Bobby Hart's bio book but no luck.

I think the first such lawsuit I heard of is when Boyce and Hart sued Johnny Nash, claiming he ripped off Hold Me Tight from Last Train To Clarksville. They won the suit, and although I can hear bits that sound similar, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say he stole the melody.

Maybe the "new" drummer, Steve Rodford, doesn't have that vintage Zombies vibe. I'm not sure why original drummer Hugh Grundy is still not with them as he was there until 2019, and he's 78, which is an average age when it comes to classic rock musicians.
The Oldies Music Board » New Zombies » April 1, 2023 3:35 pm |
Well, it's certainly been a banner time lately for fans of 60's rock acts. First, came Donovan's new album Gaelia, which was released late last year. In January, Moody Blues front-man Justin Hayward released a single called 'Living For Love', which is to be followed by a new album in August. (He's also playing a dozen or so Canadian and U.S. dates in May/June). And yesterday The Zombies dropped a new album called Different Game. I gave it a spin on Spotify but I wasn't crazy about it outside of a track called 'Got To Move On', that sounds a bit like a bluesy Steely Dan with some of Rod Argent's 'She's Not There' keyboards thrown in for good measure.

The 60s-era singer may have been a little too Mellow Yellow when cops pulled him over on suspicion of driving under the influence. He's still a pretty big star in Ireland and had just released a new LP. Officials say more charges could be pending against the hit maker, who also scored on this side of the pond with "Atlantis," Catch The Wind," "Sunshine Superman" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man," among others.
Donovan Leitch Facing Drunk Driving Charges
Thanks for the heads up on Donovan's new album. That one flew under the radar for me. I listened to it on Spotify and I thought that the first track 'Moon Over Clare' sounded most like vintage Donovan. On the rest of the stuff I thought he came across a bit too much like some kind of groovy guru.

I caught the Everly Brothers piece on CBS this morning and found it quite interesting. That being said, I don't think this new album contains any songs that are rare or long lost. They've just remastered some of the brothers' lesser known works. Personally, I would have preferred a re-release of EB 84, their comeback album produced by Dave Emunds, along with some unreleased tracks. Their recording of McCartney's 'Wings Of A Nightingale' is an absolute classic.

Don't bet on it. The band really should have packed it in when Lindsay Buckingham left instead of bringing in Neil Finn from Crowded House to replace him. I'm sure they'll try and wring every last buck out of the Big Mac. Alicia Keys' career seems to be wavering a bit and she does play keyboards...

I'm resurrecting this old thread because another fairly outrageous example has surfaced - The Box Tops are getting ready to play a gig in Ohio this week. There is a single member of the group fronting the tour.
But how you can expect the same sound without lead singer, the late Alex Chilton, is totally baffling. It's kind of like having "The Box Tops Lite." Without that powerful voice on vocals, it can't be the same experience.
Also taking the stage - The Buckinghams and the Assocation, again without the lead singers who were featured on the original hits.
There are some interesting tidbits in the linked article from a local newspaper in Warren, Ohio. According to Gary Talley - the sole original Box Tops member - the group had a ton of hits in the 60s, but made almost nothing from them, thanks to what he calls less than scrupulous management.
Talley said the band toured pretty much nonstop from 1967 until 1970, although he tells an all-too-familiar story that the band’s management saw far more money from The Box Tops’ success than the musicians did. Talley made more money from a radio commercial the band did for Coke than he did from many of the records.
And you may be surprised to learn what specific audience the chart-topping "The Letter" really appealed to.
Chart-topping Boxtops to perform with Association, Buckinghams
There are actually two original members performing, Talley and Cunningham, but I agree that without Chilton it's not the Box Tops. Funny thing is Chilton dropped that "powerful voice" after he left the Box Tops in 1970 and formed Big Star and then went on to a solo career. When Chilton reunited with the Box Tops in the early 2000's, I'll bet a lot of people thought it wasn't the original singer. (check out the video) Regardless of which voice, the guy was

Art Laboe's concept of "Oldies But Goodies" albums pioneered putting various pop music artists on one record and marketing it to the masses. He originally planned for it to be for just the Southern California area but it took off around the country and reached #12 on the Billboard LP chart back in the Fall of 1959. I happened to hear him on the radio (probably KRLA) one night in 1972 as he declared his religious belief with his audience. Since we shared our common beliefs, I wrote him a letter thanking him for his expression and for letting his audience know where he stood. I wrote the note on my radio station letterhead (KEVA) and sent it on it's way. About two weeks later, I got a package in the mail. Inside from Art Laboe were the 12 "Oldies But Goodies" vinyl discs available at that time. Today, they are among the most prized of all my collection. Thank you, Art Laboe, for you truly shared the memories with us.
Sounds like he beat K-Tel to the punch by about 10 years. Maybe he should have been given a cut of K-Tel's profits for coming up with the concept.

It's a well written piece but I'm kind of surprised that the writer said that John Fogerty's solo album Centerfield was basically the only trace left of him beyond the CCR albums. 1997's Blue Moon Swamp was a stellar work, winning the Grammy Award for Best Rock album. 2007's Revival was also a minor gem. The writer also should have tipped his stetson to the original Blue Ridge Rangers (BRR) album from 1973. It was a seminal work as Fogerty, handling all of the instruments and vocals under the guise of the BRR, was one of the first rock artists to go country, and do so in really fine fashion.
