The first 22 seconds of the video are taken up by the person showing that they are playing the same 45 that is shown on Discogs ... they show that the long version is on one side, then they flip it over to show that the short version is on the other (with a length of 3:12) before cueing it up. The sound seems to fade out around 3:32, which subtracting the original :22 would give a length of 3:10, but the playing time of the 45 is probably 3:12 and then the last few seconds of the video are when the stylus reaches the deadwax. Hope that helps.
Lorne,
please accept my apology, sorry for the unnecessary question. I just didn't get it.
I need to use my brain more next time...
So, this short version was created by cutting out the middle section and an earlier fade-out.

Is it possible to hear a short version of that song (3:12) somewhere on the internet? I didn't find it.

Thanks Lorne, it works. I see that "The Fuzz" I mentioned is listed there...

I heard Marty Robbins' "Don't Worry" yesterday and immediately thought of this thread. Here's an article about what happened during the recording of this song.
Unfortunately, that link doesn't open for me.
But the guitarist Grady Martin in question also made an instrumental recording called "The Fuzz" in 1961.

I'm not entirely convinced that compiling such information makes sense.
Sixty or fifty years ago, releasing singles was governed by different business and other rules.
It cannot be compared.
Sorry, my English is poor, I can't express myself exactly. But I hope it is clear what I mean,
what I want to say.
And the fact that it is counted only from 1958 is of course a disadvantage for Elvis.
The Oldies Music Board » Petula Clark's "Downtown" As You've Never Heard It Before » August 13, 2023 10:35 am |
I would like to write the following on the subject:
Both English (PYE) and German (Vogue Schallplatten) versions of the song were probably sold in Germany.
I have printed versions of German singles TOP 10. These TOP 10 list PYE as the publisher of that hit each week.
All other Petula Clark German hits are listed - Vogue.
It can therefore be assumed that the share of the German-sung version on the first place in the chart was negligible.
Or do you have another explanation?

The 50 greatest reggae songs of all time, ranked - Smooth (smoothradio.com)
I believe there are too many Bob Marley songs in this list. And many songs are missing.
Hurt So Good, Double Barrel, Let Your Yeah Be Yeah, Young Gifted And Black (Bob & Marcia), Help Me Make It Through The Night (John Holt), Midnight Rider, Stop The Train, Train To Skaville, Moon River (Greyhound )...
And many performers are missing - The Maytals, The Melodians,...

Yes, "Stay Around". I'm sorry, I've fixed it. And thank you for the advice on who to contact with my query.

I can't participate in this discussion because of my poor English. I don't perceive English lyrics so perfectly.
But it is clear to me from the discussion that these are similar errors and imperfections as in the Czech texts...

I guess a story is a story. And it doesn't change over time.
What if it was the other way around ? A man was the unfaithful and the song was sung by a female singer?
Would that also be "politically incorrect" today?

You "pressed my button" mroldies: The Monarchs cover of Look Homeward Angel in 1964 is in Little Rich's Top 25 songs of all time. Johnny Ray may have charted 36 and The Monarchs only 47, The Monarchs, by far, had more soul in the music, with great harmony - super cover by them. The week that they peaked on the chart, the Top 5 songs were Beatles and 15 of the Hot 100 were Beatles, so, I don't feel bad about The Monarchs only peaking at 47.
Little Rich, I'm glad someone has the same taste in music as me.
I also like blues, R&B and other genres…

aflem,
Thank you, unfortunately, I can't read it, I don't have a Facebook account.
Lorne,
Thank you, you wrote that very interestingly - "not having enough of a pop sound".
I wouldn't have thought of that explanation. I guess I don't have the right musical insight.
The Oldies Music Board » "Look Homeward Angel" » July 28, 2023 8:19 am |
I'm doing a one-hour radio show on the hits of late October 1968. I found the song "Look Homeward Angel"
on the AC Billboard chart. by Ray Conniff & The Singers. I didn't know it before, I hear it's a beautiful tune.
And understandable lyrics for a Central European. I wonder why more singers haven't sung this pretty song
and why it hasn't been more successful in the charts. (Best Johnnie Ray, No. 36 in 1957.)
There are probably more tunes like this that didn't do better. This one, "beautifully sad," intrigued me greatly.
Maybe it's also that as I get older, I get more sensitive and sentimental...

Thank you Lorne.
So it can be said that the change from "TOP 100" to "HOT 100" also meant a fundamental change in the methodology
of compiling the ranking of singles.
I'll add that "Tequila" was No.1 on the "Best Selling Pop Singles In Stores" chart for five weeks.
The Oldies Music Board » The First #1 Rock Instrumental On Billboard Happened By Accident » July 20, 2023 8:19 am |
Lorne,
I know the history of the HOT 100 on Wikipedia. And I also have Whitburn's book "Billboard Pop Charts 1955-1959".
Unfortunately, that Wikipedia article doesn't mention the methodology of how the HOT 100 was compiled in the 1950s and 1960s. I believe it was the same or very similar to the TOP 100 methodology.
I wasn't there, but I dare to write that TOP 100 was "early HOT 100", and that in August 1958 it was just a name change to make it more attractive.
If you have other information or a different opinion, I'd be happy to read it. It's quite distant history, about many things we can probably only speculate today.
The Oldies Music Board » The First #1 Rock Instrumental On Billboard Happened By Accident » July 19, 2023 6:00 pm |
What is the difference between Top 100 and Hot 100? Just in the name of the ranking?
In that case, the first rock'n'roll instrumental that was No.1 in the hundred-place chart should be "Tequila".
Or am I mistaken?

In our country, you can buy a used vibraslap for 21 USD including shipping.
And the new cheapest vibraslap is $30 including shipping. If no one had lent it to me, I thought like this:
I'm curious so I'll buy it and after I try it out I'll dedicate it to some band...
I'm probably crazy, right?
The Oldies Music Board » Walter Murphy - "The Fifth Of Beethoven" » July 13, 2023 6:41 pm |
I would like to try the vibraslap.
I'm already asking the local conservatory, the theater orchestra and the symphony orchestra if they have this instrument.
The Oldies Music Board » Walter Murphy - "The Fifth Of Beethoven" » July 11, 2023 5:48 pm |
I noticed that the vibraslap is also used at the beginning of The First Symphony by Polish composer
Krysztoph Penderecki (1973).
from Wiki:
In 1972-1978 he was a professor at the School of Music of Yale University in the United States.
In 1973 he completed his first symphony, which premiered in Peterborough (England).

I'm glad that you found this info, but I have felt the same way about many other songs that you've asked about before ... I've wondered how they became known in Czechoslovakia when they've been quite obscure here.
This is a Czechoslovak TV show in which the Czech version of the song was used. It was broadcast in the years 1983-1991.
Always at the end of the show, here at 1:03.48 - 1:06:18
American show "Cinderella At The Palace" was later also broadcast on British and Dutch television.
And it is possible that the cultural department of the American Embassy in Prague also had the videotape.
This department probably also lent audio and video media to potential interested parties.
That's probably how the original recording got to our country.

I found the following caption at the end of the 1978 "Cinderella At The Palace" TV special:
"Special music material and choral direction - Ray Charles"
I believe Charles Raymond Offenberg is meant.
And also - I found on bmi.com that Ray Charles (Charles Raymond Offenberg) composed the song "Cinderella At The Palace".
It remains a mystery to me how the song got through the iron curtain to us in the then socialist Czechoslovakia, when it was nowhere on the single, on the LP and in the music charts.
The Oldies Music Board » Ray Charles or The Ray Charles Singers or someone else? » July 4, 2023 6:30 pm |
I put the problem here and searched further. And "Uncle Google" and "Aunt youtube" helped me.
It is originally the opening and closing song of the American 1978 TV special "Cinderella At The Palace".
But I couldn't find any written confirmation that Ray Charles really composed the music.
Can you help me find it on the internet?
