Ralph Emery

I am a longtime fan of Ralph's, from his overnight days on WSM.  But sometimes, Ralph can just back  himself into a corner and do the weirdest things.  This would be why Ray Stevens wrote a song called Ralph, You Have Embarrassed Us All.  On Nashville Now, the  night he had the Texas Tornados and Ray Price - Ralph to Doug - You were in the Sir Douglas Quartet, right?  To Flaco Jimenez "Is it Flaco or Flako?"  At this point he has decided to give up and just talk to Freddy Fender.  He asks Freddy if they have considered talking to Blondie Calderon about joining them, and Freddy says very emphatically "He's very happy with Ray Price."

Another night with the Nashville Bluegrass Band, introduced as the Grammy nominated Nashville Bluegrass Band, Ralph says "Do you guys record?'" How do you get a Grammy nomination if you don't record?  And there was a night with Bruce Channel, Delbert McClinton and Tracy Nelson that somehow revolved around somebody biting off part of her ear, or something.  It was weird.

But to top off all of this, I recently came across a clip of Nashville Now with an Oldies Show.  It was a pretty crappy oldies show - Tommy Sands and some guy from the Diamonds I never heard of.  But Lou Christie and the Dixie Cups were good.  The Dixie Cups looked so pretty in their matching but different color beautiful dresses.  When they finished singing Chapel of Love, Ralph walked up to them, and just blurted out - wait for it - nothing about them, their song, their career, anything - DO YOU KNOW CLARENCE FROGMAN HENRY?  (Oh, Ralph, you have embarrassed us all!!!)  And just went on and on about his Ain't Got No Home song, when he should have been talking about the Dixie Cups' song.

Re: Ralph Emery

well, you must know that ralph had a lengthy addiction to amphetamines, which surely affected his comprehensive accumen.
it might be also notrd that the byrds wrote "drug store truck drivin' man" about ralph after he refused to play their cover of a dylan song on his show because he said he didn't understand what it was about, and the byrds had no explanation as didn't know either. "it's a bob dylan song, ralph" is apparently the best mcguinn could come up with.
