Joel Whitburn, Chart Historian and Reference Book Author, Dies at 82

Joel Whitburn, one of the pre-eminent chart historians of the last 50-plus years, has died. The news was first shared on Facebook by Whitburn’s protégé, longtime friend and Record Research co-worker Paul Haney, who wrote that the legendary industry figure “passed away peacefully overnight” on Tuesday (June 14). “He had been having some serious health issues recently, but his passing still comes as a shock,” Haney continued. Whitburn was 82.

I have 30 of Joel's releases (including the DVD of his incredible library) and all have plenty of wear and tear on them.  I bought the first one he published in 1970 and just kept adding on.  Thank you, Joel Whitburn, for satisfying my addiction to pop music chart statistics.  We never met, but I considered you a friend and you were always there with the answer I needed. Thanks again, R.I.P.

Here's another article about Joel Whitburn that I saw on my local radio/tv forum.
