Revered "Wrecking Crew" Guitarist Dies At 102

You've probably never heard of Bill Pitman. But you've almost certainly heard his work. He was a guitarist with the world-famous Wrecking Crew, the backing musicians who played on some of rock's biggest hit records. Pitman has passed away after an amazing but sometimes anonymous career in music.

He played on songs like "Be My Baby," "Good Vibrations," "Mr. Tambourine Man," and even Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night." If you remember the opening of B.J. Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," you heard him loud and clear - that's Pitman playing the ukulele on the famous movie theme. He did work on other TV shows and films, in addition to being an in-demand session musician.

According to his New York Times obit, Pitman was a gifted musician who ironically enough never really liked rock and roll. But he was able to play it well and it made him a very good living. He also had a very long life - he was 102 when he passed on Thursday night.
