John Lennon and the Toronto Rock ‘N Roll Revival concert

It was the event that signalled the end of the Beatles — and it happened here in Toronto more than half a century ago.
John Lennon wasn’t even a part of the original lineup of the Toronto Rock ‘N Roll Revival, a concert festival celebrating the forefathers of the genre with headlining pioneers Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley and Gene Vincent sharing the same Varsity Stadium stage on Sept. 13, 1969.

Interesting article.  Those promoters might have been ahead of their time with an "oldies" concert" in 1969.  By the early to mid 70s, oldies concerts were all the rage, with the Richard Nader Madison Square Garden concerts leading the way.

Rock greats together. God, that must have been a wonderful concert.

The Plastic Ono Band's recordings from this concert were released on the album "Live Peace In Toronto 1969".
BUT - why do some labels on that album say "Recorded in England"?
Do any of you know the answer? Is there any explanation?

Re: John Lennon and the Toronto Rock ‘N Roll Revival concert

Although I'm a lifelong Torontonian and was listening to CHUM in 1969, I was only nine years old at the time and have no recollection of the concert or anything about the album. But from what I've read about it, I've always thought that it was a true "live" album that was recorded here. However, I had a look at the info about it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Peace_in_Toronto_1969#Recording, and I wonder if what you're seeing has anything to do with Lennon mixing the album and making some modifications at the Abbey Road Studios. Perhaps some people with a limited understanding about this have thought that it was one of those purportedly "live" albums that actually involved studio recordings, leading them to label it in the way that you described. Just a guess on my part.

Are you sure the label didn't say "Manufactured in England", because that's what the UK pressings of the record have on them.

Re: John Lennon and the Toronto Rock ‘N Roll Revival concert

I stopped reading the Wikipedia article earlier once I got to the section I cited because I was going out, but I just had a look at the next section at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Peace_in_Toronto_1969#Release_and_aftermath and found the answer.
"The album, released on the same day in both the UK and US,[27] failed to chart in the UK[nb 2] but peaked at number 10 in the US.[nb 3][6] It was released to quash any bootleg versions that Lennon was sure would leak onto the market. US editions of the album wrongly stated that the album was recorded in England.[21]"

Lorne, and others,
sorry I didn't find this information on wikipedia myself. And that I unnecessarily occupied other members of this forum.

That's ok, mroldies. It was a good question, because it is quite strange that any copies of this album would have been labelled this way given its title. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone here on the board.

A fascinating follow-up to the story, involving the promoter who helped bring that concert to Toronto - and the incredible trouble he found trying to land then unknowns like Led Zeppelin for his local club and the "thug" manager he came to blows with.
