Bernie Taupin Reveals The One Song That Made Him Want To Be A Composer

He's written something new - but it's a book and not a song. In it, Elton John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin reveals the one song he heard as a kid that made him want to go into the music business to "tell stories."

It was Marty Robbins' famous "El Paso."

"When I heard that song, I went, 'Wow. You can write stories and have people sing them too.' And that was always my mantra all the way through my life: I wanted to be a storyteller. I didn't understand the process of songwriting or what really a lyricist was. I didn't like to be referred to as a poet and I loathe it still to this day, you know. I just always wanted to be a storyteller."

He also reveals - and it's almost impossible to fathom now - that the legendary "Candle In The Wind" originally wasn't about Marilyn Monroe at all.
