Barry Manilow Reveals The Stories Behind His Biggest Hits

He's not everyone's taste, but Barry Manilow had a huge career and a ton of major hits in the 70s. Now the crooner reveals the stories behind some of them, both those he wrote and the ones he performed off the pens of others.

At least one became a huge surprise he never expected - "Copacabana (At The Copa.")

“’Copa’ wasn’t supposed to be a hit,” says Manilow. “Bruce and I wrote it as the novelty cut” for his Even Now album...”

The record label exes scratched their heads over what kind of song it was meant to be, and ultimately didn’t think it could be a hit, either. But as more and more listeners called radio stations to request it from the album, “Copa” became yet another Top 10 hit, earning Manilow his only Grammy, in 1979, for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

And the song, ironically, would turn out to be perhaps his most successful single of all time, and certainly his most widely known."
