Opening Some Old "Doors": The Films Of Ray Manzarek

I confess I'm not a huge Doors fan, but I appreciated most of their biggest hits. Next to Jim Morrison, one of the most famous members of The Doors had to be the late Ray Manzarek, their prolific keyboard player.

But what I never knew is that this famous musician was once a film student who made a number of pictures in his very young college days under his real name of Ray Manczarek.

At least two of them are online. The first is called "Induction." It was made in 1965 and lasts about 15 minutes. Flick #2 is called Evergreen, a picture from 1964 that is only 12 and a half minutes long.

Neither is great cinema. But it sure is interesting to see this future rock star in a decidedly non-musical role as both director and actor.

Both shorts have been preserved and put on the web by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. They may not Light Your Fire, but they do show that sometimes, People Are Strange, no matter how far back you go.
