Same Title – Different Songs

I’m always fascinated by trivia surrounding Top 40 tunes and this one is really odd – songs that were hits with the exact same name that were entirely different tunes. It didn’t happen often, but there are certainly enough of them to make you stop and think. In some cases, most of the titles are almost the same. In others, they're identical.

Here are a few examples I was able to come up with:

2 Titles

Color My World – Petula Clark
Color My World – Chicago

Words – Bee Gees
Words – Monkees

Candy Man – Roy Orbison
Candy Man – Sammy Davis Jr.

Close Your Eyes – Peaches & Herb
Close Your Eyes – Edward Bear

Take Me Back – Little Anthony & The Imperials
Take Me Back – David Clayton Thomas & The Shays (Canadian hit)

Day After Day – Badfinger
Day After Day – Shango

Diary – Neil Sedaka
Diary – Bread

Do It – Neil Diamond
Do It (Till You’re Satisfied) – BT Express

 3 Titles

Games People Play – Joe South
Games People Play – Alan Parsons Project
Games People Play (They Just Can’t Stop It) -Spinners

Superstar – Murray Head
Superstar – Carpenters
Superstar – The Temptations

4 Titles

Do It Again - Beach Boys
Do It Again - Steely Dan
Do It Again (Just A Little Bit Slower) - Jon & Robin & The In Crowd
(Let's) Do It Again - Staple Singers

I’ll Be There – Four Tops
I’ll Be There – Gerry & The Pacemakers
I’ll Be There – Jackson 5
I’ll Be There – Damito Jo (Stand By Me answer record)

The Weirdest One

I’ve saved the best for last – as far as I know, there’s only one instance of the same group having two separate hits with a song by the exact same name, The honor belongs to The Dave Clark Five, who did it with Everybody Knows in 1964 and an entirely different song called Everybody Knows in 1967.
