It's one of the most iconic album covers of the 70s, back when we still had album covers. The shot of Doors frontman Jim Morrison standing in the window of L.A.'s "Morrison Hotel" is one of the great images in music, but now that famous building is a shadow of its former self, after it was razed by fire.
It took 17 companies 90 minutes to get the blaze under control and the damage is significant. Ironically, the building was once used by the LAFD for training.
The story behind that cover is almost as legendary as the music on the LP.
“On this day, December 17th, 1969, we were out taking photos for the Morrison Hotel album cover,” [photographer Henry] Diltz wrote on Facebook. “We were at a transient hotel in Downtown LA on Hope Street. The Doors didn’t have permission to take pictures, so when the lobby was empty, they ran in quickly and sat behind the window.”
