It's been a while since we've heard of virtual one hit wonder Freda Payne, whose "Band of Gold" was a huge hit in the 70s. (Her follow-up, a great song called "Deeper and Deeper" was pretty good but did not become a big seller.)
Now the singer is back in the spotlight as she prepares to star in a new movie featuring Louis Price, once with The Temptations. The film will be called "A Sudden Family."
What's it about?
"The film follows a high school wrestling coach who finds himself caught between chasing a long-awaited dream job and managing an unexpected new family dynamic — one that forces him to reevaluate what truly matters. The film will also mark an on-screen pairing between Payne and her son Gregory Abbott Jr."

Like you, for the longest time I only knew Freda Payne for her great songs "Band Of Gold" and "Deeper And Deeper", because they were the only ones that got airplay in the Toronto area. However, at some point after I got on the internet, I became aware that she'd also had another significant US hit with the Vietnam War protest song "Bring The Boys Home", which reached #12 in 1971.
But the reference to Gregory Abbott Jr. being her son was a surprise to me, because I had no idea that she'd been married to the singer Gregory Abbott -- who ironically just had one major hit himself, the #1 record "Shake You Down" from 1986. However, they were only married from 1976 to 1979, so that helps to explain why I wasn't aware of the connection before. Probably somewhat better-known (at least to me) is that Freda's sister Scherrie was a latter-day member of The Supremes from 1973 to 1977.
Anyway, it's great to see that Freda is still going strong. As for Louis Price, I wasn't familiar with his involvement with The Temptations, but Wikipedia states that he was their lead singer from 1977 to 1979. And while they didn't reach the Hot 100 during that time, they did have a few R&B hits, and so he is a legitimate part of the group's history.
