Pioneering King Records Documentary Airing On PBS

Just saw this on my local radio board and thought it should probably be here, too. PBS is airing a documentary called "King Of Them All: The King Records Story." It's a 90 minute film about the relatively lost King Records, which recorded some of the most important early soul and R&B artists, including Hank Ballard and James Brown.

From the looks of the trailers, (if you're in Canada, you'll need a VPN to see them), their stories are quite amazing.

The Hank Ballard trailer explains how he got away with dirty lyrics in his songs at a time when those weren't allowed in polite society, and certainly not on records you brought into your home.

And the James Brown preview outlines how the white owner of the label could not understand how the future Hardest Working Man in Show Business could record a song with virtually only one word in it.

Looks like a great special. It airs Oct. 10th at 9 PM on PBS, although depending on where you're reading this, it could be at a different time. So as the old saying goes, check your local listings on that day and for alternate airings.
