Interestingly enough, The Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin herself recorded Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool For You Baby) just two years after Lulu charted #22 and only charted #73.  Not to take away from Ms. Franklin's awesome talent.

I didn't know that she had done that song, so I did find that interesting. But it also reminds me of how by 1971, I had wondered about how advisable it was for her to be doing so many songs that had previously been a hit for another artist within the past couple of years. She was certainly great at reinterpreting songs in her own style, with "Respect" being the ultimate example of how that could work out very well for her. However, because it can be such an uphill battle for an artist to try to have a hit again with a song that's been a recent hit, I thought at the time that it might have been better for her if she hadn't been doing so many songs like that.

The other song by Lulu that I remember is 'The Boat That I Row'. It was a pretty big single on Toronto's Chum Chart, which became even bigger when they flipped it over and started playing 'To Sir With Love'.

I had thought of "The Boat That I Row" as well, and so I looked it up on Wikipedia. It only "bubbled under" the Hot 100, peaking at #115, whereas it reached #1 nationally in Canada and #6 in the UK.

Re: More Top 40 Hits Than You Might Think

It is interesting how certain songs are a hit in Canada but not in the U.S., and vice versa.

For example, I was thinking about the Cascades as meeting the criteria for this topic, but based on the U.S. charts, they do not.  While Rhythm of the Rain was a huge hit (#3), they had no other top 40 hits.

However, if we were using the Canadian charts, the Cascades would quality for this topic, as ROTR went to #1 in Canada; but they also had two other top 40s in Canada - Shy Girl got to #11 (only #91 in the U.S.) and Maybe The Rain Will Fall reached #39 (only #61 in the U.S.)
