Yes, it’s a cliche, but you can tell that Pete Townshend really has gotten old. On Thursday he apologized for remarking in a new Rolling Stone interview that he felt a certain relief, as a musician, after his old Who bandmates Keith Moon and John Entwistle died. The Pete of 50 years ago would never have thought to apologize for this, or been made to; his gloomy, occasionally vicious Rolling Stone interviews used to be a much-anticipated annual event. The Townshend attitude that inspired the remarks has not changed one bit in the intervening years. But time puts everyone on the defensive.
