Riots, Lighters & Wagers: The Story Behind Sam & Dave's "Soul Man"

What does a Detroit riot, a Zippo lighter. a place called Woodstock and a $20,000 bet have to do with the legendary Sam & Dave song "Soul Man?"

It's all explained in this article about the writing and making of one of the 60s most famous tunes.

Re: Riots, Lighters & Wagers: The Story Behind Sam & Dave's "Soul Man"

Thanks for posting this. Years ago on the former board, we had a discussion about this song with regards to the Woodstock angle. Based on what was said back then, I came away thinking that they were actually singing "good stock", and so it came as a surprise to me to see what Porter had to say about it. Just did a search and ended up on the amiright site, where there is discussion of this at http://www.amiright.com/misheard/song/soulman.shtml that may be of interest as well.
