We discuss a lot of oldies here but rarely is a song from the 60s in the headlines for other reasons. Which brings us to the Christmas Day bombing involving an RV outside an AT&T building in a Nashville suburb. Even as police continue their probe into the who and the why, authorities have revealed that, in addition to an announcement that an explosive was going to off, the vehicle was blaring Petula Clark's classic "Downtown" before the thing went up in flames.
Now experts, who leave no stone unturned in these kinds of investigations, are looking at the lyrics of the song and wondering about lines like, "When you're alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go Downtown" and other words in the tune that may have had some significance to the bomber.
What a weird way for an oldie to come back to prominence, especially such a big and seemingly innocuous hit.

truly bizzare. i guess maybe we can rule out a very disgruntled opry fan sick of hat-hop country... otherwise they'd have blown up gaylord entertainment, and would have been playing "fireball mail" by roy acuff and his smoky mountain boys..

Petula Clark, now 88 years old (Yikes! How is that possible?) has finally responded to the use of her biggest hit as part of this bizarre and explosive story.
“Of all the thousands of songs — why this one?
“Of course, the opening lyric is ‘When you’re alone and life is making you lonely you can always go downtown.’ But millions of people all over the world have been uplifted by this joyful song. Perhaps you can read something else into these words — depending on your state of mind. It’s possible.”

I've always liked Petula Clark as a person, as well as for her singing. Very nice to see her thoughtful and caring response to this very unfortunate misuse of her song.
