Why Do They Insist On Declaring This?

"The day the music died"...   Music didn't die on this date (February 3, 1959). Three talented entertainers and a young pilot died, but music definitely did not.  I've heard that even Don McLean has said he wants to vomit whenever he hears that someone (fellow entertainer, DJ, etc) who should know better attaches this fateful date to his song.

If he feels like that........ why did he link the two in the first place to give people the connection ?   Music didn't die but something was sure  lost , maybe a sense of innocence.     It didn't help that  within a short time,   Elvis  had joined the army,  Chuck Berry was in jail, Little Richard had gone religious and Jerry Lee  was  persona non grata in some circles.  Maybe it felt like the end  of those  great early  days of rock and roll.
