Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

Mine would have been the James Brown Revue in the late summer of 1962 at Buffalo Memorial Arena. It was also my first major concert at the tender age of 18.  Never before had I experienced such a huge production... a packed arena... two drummers, two keyboard/organs... guitars... horns... the Famous Flames... and on and on... and of course James Brown himself. I've seen many top-name entertainers' concerts since them, but the James Brown Revue will always be at the top of my list.

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

It was December of 1977.  In the rather compact basketball arena at the U. of Oregon, the Beach Boys came to play.  They were all there, including Brian, Bruce, and a solid string section.   Since it was the U. of Oregon, quite a large number of students were there who had come to school from California.  The arena was just the right size to squeeze us all together, the acoustics were perfect and the love from the audience to the Boys was returned in total.  As an old DJ, I attended many concerts but if I could have bottled the high (without any other stimulus) that was in my head that night, I could have retired right there on the spot.  I saw the Boys two other times, once at the famed Lagoon Amusement Park ("All the kids dig the Lagoon now") and the other at the Portland, OR baseball park.  They were good but nowhere close to that magic night!!

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

I would have to include two.

1- Any of the four Gene Pitney concerts we saw in the late 90's and early 2000's (all in Casinos).  Always a classy event.  Regular rhythm section band, but also strings, percussionist, and back-up singers.  Gene was always faithful to the hits, but also included songs by other performers/writers that he enjoyed.  Needless to say, Gene's voice was always spot-on. Added bonus, on 3 of those occasions we got to "meet and greet" with Gene.

2- In 2012 (could be off by a year or two) we got tickets for one of the "Kenny Vance: Up Close and Personal" concerts that he used to do occasionally.  It was in a small venue about the size of a high school theater (maybe 250 seats), in Gibsonnia, Pa.  Kenny (and the Planotones) were on stage for 3 hours, singing, talking about the songs, and answering questions from the audience.  It felt like Kenny was performing for a large group of friends.  Naturally, Kenny's voice and the harmonies of the Planotones were absolutely amazing.  That was on July 3rd, and the next day we drove about 50 miles to Franklin, Pa. (population 6 000), watched the 4th of July parade, and that evening took in a band shell concert by the Vogues in the town square.

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

Tough question. The first that comes to mind was Carole King in Ames, Iowa in February 1976. If it wasn't her birthday was awfully close to it. No opening act and she played for nearly three hours.

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

of course there's many other memorable moments
July 4, '75 The Stones in Mem and their legendary idea of coming on stage on elephants and flaunting the stage "gimmicks" on Star Star
Seeing Tull do Aqualung for the first time
B. B. King play up close and personal at his club on his birthday

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

1959: Dion & The Belmonts at my high school, St. Cecilia's in Englewood, NJ.   Also on the bill was an all black band of about 8 musicians called Tyree Glen & the Emeralds who almost blew the roof off the gym with an array of guitars, drums, saxes and some heavy R&B.  Rumor had it that our Mother Superior was not entertained by the show and consequently this was the first and last rock n'roll show at the school.  Memories are made of this.

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

Without a doubt my favourite concert was on July 27, 1974 outdoors at Varsity Stadium, Toronto. It was America with James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt also on the bill. I've been to many concerts before and since then and nothing ever topped that for me.

Re: Do You Have ONE Favorite Concert?

not even remotely. hundreds of 'em, easily. though one kinda stands out. when i was still in high school, writing an underground paper, "freedom rider", curtis mayfield played a show at west virginia tech college. i was invited to attend, and granted a five minute interview between his two shows, the first of which had to be shut down because students were rushing the stage in overenthusiastic support. i asked a bunch of quick dumb questions, but he answered them in a teaching way that profoundly moved me.

at the end of the second show i was able to talk to master henry gibson, who was mayfield's well known percussionist. he had nothing but praise for his boss, and assured me that my impression of curtis was indeed correct. gibson seemed almost devoted to curtis, and mayfield's message of a sensible revolution rang true to me then as well, and still does today.

...did i ever tell ya about gregg allman and the tooth fairy at the new haven coliseum? great show too. seriously, maybe the best show i remember might be a manfred mann gig, opening for somebody mid-seventies. he played hits and everything in between in one piece, as if a suite, with no breaks. simply brilliant.
