As we inch closer to the 40th anniversary of that horribly unforgettable day, Dec. 8, 1980, the Smithsonian Magazine takes a look back at what would be the final day of the Beatle icon's life. I wonder what might have happened had that security guard taken John up on his dinner offer. We'll never know.
