What "Do You Believe In Magic" & Martha & The Vandellas Have In Common

According to the website "American Songwriter," The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian admits he 'borrowed' the opening chords of Martha & The Vandellas "Heatwave," which he sped up and used as the opening for his first big hit.

I love finding out stuff like that and I'll be sure to listen for that the next time I hear that classic.

That's a fun fact.  I don't hear it, though.

"Do You Believe In Magic" was one of the summer's hits,  that when as a third grader I discovered radio. I have a vivid memory of swinging from a tree in my backyard and hearing this song. I just remember thinking it was one of the most astounding and yes, magical songs I'd ever heard.  That classic stands up today and will never go out of style.

This is going to sound bizarre BUT:  I've listened to both, back-to-back, and it STILL sounds like Sebastian SLOWED the tempo down, not sped it up.  I get the sound, yeah there's a resemblance IF you slow the tempo.
