chuck berry at newport jazz fest, 1958

just saw the film, "jazz on a summer's day". no real surprise that chuck would have been included since newport's jazz (and folk) fest parameters have always been quite broad.

couldn't tell if johnnie johnson was with him, but he must have been playing with a mostly 'pickup' band... does anybody know who played the killer clarinet solo during "sweet little sixteen"?

It was my understanding that Berry always used a pick up band on the road. He traveled by himself. I think Springstein mentions he played back up for him when he was younger.

i was trying to imply that at newport, a pickup band would by definition likely be made up of jazz masters, if not all stars, as opposed to the next package show or whatever... and whoever blew that clarinet knew exactly what he was doing.
