Battle of the Bands -- The Skyliners vs The Casinos

I'm having a tough time picking one over the other

Since I Don't Have You by the Skyliners 1959

Or The Casinos Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye from 1967

The songs sound an awful lot alike to my ear

Do you have a preference?? I can't make up my mind

Love to get your opinions & insights on both

Re: Battle of the Bands -- The Skyliners vs The Casinos

I like them both, but I do tend to favor the Skyliners.  The Casinos had 1 Top 10 and one other chart hit at #65.  The Skyliners had 3 in the Top 40 and 2 more also rans.  I do believe that my choice is based on the Skyliners  being a part of my 11th and 12th grade memories of my high school years.  Dancing to their hits with girls who otherwise ignored me and becoming a go-to fellow for pop music info among my peers.  When the Casinos hit, I had already left the pop scene and was making my place as a Country Music DJ.

Two exceptional songs, but easy for me to choose one over the other.

Each song has a great sound unto itself, and the harmonies are amazing,  Jimmy Beaumont and Gene Hughes each provide fantastic lead vocals.

What decides it for me is Janet Vogel's soprano voice at the end of "Since I Don't Have You".  Always hated when on occasion DJ's would fade out the "you-oo's" and and cut off that amazing soaring vocal.

Couldn't agree more with GrimsbyFan about that great ending. One of my favorite parts of the record and by far just one of many factors that make it far superior to The Casinos.

(I also love the lyric that goes:

"When you walked out me,
In walked the misery
And he's been here since then.")

"Since I Don't Have You" is a just a flat out great record, and one of those 50s tunes that never sounds out of date on an oldies station that generally ignores that era. When it comes to comparing it to the Casinos, all bets are off!

Skyliners all the way. "Since I fell" is a top five oldie

I'm in agreement, here.  Skyliners all the way.  Jimmy Beaumont's beautiful lead vocal, and Janet's  incredible ending.  Was she REALLY only 16 when she did that?  Hard to imagine, but stunning whatever.

For those who think there was some similarity between the two songs, do a bit of research.  Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye is an older song, first version probably by Johnny Nash in early 60s.  So they are from similar eras.  But for those of us with strong country music ties, there's still something in here for us - it was written by John D. Loudermilk.  Just another example of how all the music of our era was intertwined.  And why I love it all, and maintain it was all one.  (And I think Eddy Arnold had a hit on it too)

Re: Battle of the Bands -- The Skyliners vs The Casinos

You're right on Flo: Janet was born in June of 1942 and the song was released in December 1958.   Not to be  bearer of bad tidings but Janet committed suicide in 1980 at 37 yrs old.

Speaking of similarities: Listen to The Skyliners "Since I Fell For You", then listen to the Skyliners "This I Swear"  They ALL sound alike.
Note:  In 1994 hard-core hard rock group Guns N' Roses released "Since I Fell For You."
