I never knew that The Beatles ever toured with anyone but Ringo Starr behind the kit but I just read about Jimmie Nicol, who played eight shows during the Fab Four's '64 Australian tour when Ringo was out with tonsillitis. (One wonders why that would sideline him but that's another story). Anyway, according to Wikipedia, when Ringo came back Brian Epstein "presented Nicol with a cheque for £500 and a gold Eterna-matic wrist watch inscribed: "From the Beatles and Brian Epstein to Jimmy – with appreciation and gratitude." Sadly, he experienced no further musical success and even declared bankruptcy shortly after his tenure in The Beatles. Wonder if he hocked the watch.
