It was done in the interest of not offending anyone, a sort of very early political correctness. But you have to wonder why a company as big as Clear Channel (now iHeart Radio) would have gone to the trouble of sending out a memo warning its stations not to play certain songs during that terrible time in 2001.
Some, like "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Peter, Paul and Mary, make perfect sense. Others, like "Imagination" from John Lennon or "World Without Love" by Peter & Gordon are simply ridiculous. Here's the list of all the tunes the radio owner banned for the duration of the emergency - not that anyone was playing very much music that week, as the disaster and the shock unfolded across the world.

Political correctness had been going on for about 30 years by the time of the 9/11 attacks.
I can understand how “All we are is dust in the wind" might be disturbing to some people at the time but some of those songs on the list are a far reach to ban. Where is Ahab the Arab?
