I’d be interested in knowing where he got the idea.  I did it myself for a short time after seeing the character Evil Eye Fleagle in the 1959 movie “Li'l Abner.”  Maybe they got the idea from Chuck.

(I was surprised to see that Donna Douglas and Valerie Harper were in that movie.)

Later, I did it for several years as an electrician checking traction motors in pits under diesel locomotives.  There was only about 30” clearance.  Girls used to do a squat while dancing and I would match them.  When they got as low as they could go and stood up, I’d go even lower.
