Before Music Videos There Were Scopitones

I first heard of Scopitones when a guy hosting an all night show in Toronto started showing some of them in the wee hours, when few were watching.

They were a sort of early music video jukeboxes, featuring the stars of the time, usually surrounded by attractive or scantily-clad young women. The technology actually goes back a long way, but when TV and other technology came in, they were virtually wiped out. If you've never experienced a Scopitone, you're in for a treat. Here's a site that outlines the history of this now dead medium.

Scopitone: '60s Music Videos You've Never Seen

Meanwhile, the old videos are all over YouTube. Here are two of the most famous: Neil Sedaka singing "Calendar Girl," and Nancy Sinatra with "These Boots Are Made For Walking." Two great songs performed in the cheesiest manner possible.
