He was a jazz legend but you wouldn't often hear him on Top 40 radio in the 60s and 70s. With one exception. The Ramsey Lewis Trio had a hit in 1965 with an instrumental version of "The In Crowd," the Dobie Grey classic. He won three Grammy Awards for his work, including for "Crowd" and recorded literally dozens and dozens of LPs over the years, beginning in 1956.

He did have some other reasonable size hits Hang On Sloopy reached # 11, Wade In The Water # 19. 17 Top 100 hits in all.

I saw Ramsey Lewis in concert back in 1967. While I am not much of a jazz fan, I really enjoyed the evening and after the show I was able to get backstage and visit with him for a minute. He truly was one of the giants in the world of jazz who also made his presence known to the pop music fans.
