Travis Kelce's "Viva Las Vegas" Chant Earns Doc Pomus Estate Royalties

It wasn't really even a song, per se. But when Travis Kelce exploded in a chant of "Viva Las Vegas" after his team won the Super Bowl, it had an effect on more than just the crowd. It also earned a nice sum of money for the estates of writers Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.

The tune was originally written for Elvis Presley and the movie of the same name, and under the rules, every time it's performed - even in a strange case like this - royalties have to be paid.

"Pomus, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songwriter who wrote classics such as The Drifters’ “Save the Last Dance for Me” and “This Magic Moment”; The Coasters’ “Young Blood”; and Presley’s “Little Sister,” was a “sports fanatic,” according to [Will Bratton, president of Pomus Songs Inc.] who is married to Pomus’ daughter, Sharyn Felder.

“He would have been thrilled that his song was used like that,” he says of Kelce’s “Vegas” rendition. “It was more of a holler than a sing. It was his enthusiasm that was notable.” He adds: “We just like it to make money.”
