Why "Sweet Home Alabama's" Famous Intro Was A Mistake

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" was never one of my favourite records (it usually causes me to turn the dial) but one part of the song I always like is in its intro, where you hear Ronnie van Zant say "Turn it up!"

I always thought that was an instruction to listeners that a good rocker was coming and to reach for the volume on their radios. But according to this article celebrating the tune's 50th anniversary, that wasn't what that was about at all. In fact, it was never supposed to be on the record in the first place.
