In Honor of Veteran’s Day, Easy Trivia Question

In honor of Veteran’s Day, here is an easy trivia question from “Pink Shoelaces” by Dodie Stevens (1959).

When Dooley had a feeling we were going to war, he enlisted in the United States Military.  In which branch of the Military did Dooley enlist as strongly suggested by the song?

Please include the clues in the song that led to your conclusion.

Since the answer is a no brainer for us Veterans, we are asking the Veterans not to provide the answer.  Still, it should be very easy for the rest.

Re: In Honor of Veteran’s Day, Easy Trivia Question

I'm assuming it is the Navy, given that he "landed in the brig."

Interestingly, earlier in the song (before he enlisted in a fightin' corps), he took his girl deep-sea fishing in a submarine.  Not sure exactly how you do that, but another indication that the Navy would be his chosen military branch.

I'm curious as to why he enlisted.  Back  then (1961) the draft still existed.  Was it the case that if you enlisted instead of waiting for a draft notice, you could choose your military branch?

Also, Dooley was clearly a wealthy man.  After all, he''s got a "whirly-birdy and a twelve-foot yacht" and takes his girl to the drive-in "in a limousine".  Couldn't he have used his riches to somehow avoid military service?  Maybe he was very patriotic

Re: In Honor of Veteran’s Day, Easy Trivia Question

A few other songs relating to the military.

Battle of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
Mr. Custer - Larry Verne
Ballad of the Green Berets - Sraff Sargeant Barry Sadler
Deck Of Cards - Wink Martindale
Billy and Sue - BJ Thomas
Navy Blue / Kiss Me Sailor - Diane Renay
A Casual Look - The Six Teens

Interesting contrast in two of the above songs.

In Navy Blue, the guy wants to go away before he settles down (and marries)
"'Cause my steady boy said, "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Navy

He said he wanted to settle down
And let me be his girl
But first he had to do a little travelin' around
And see the whole wide world"

In A Casual Look, the guy wants to settle down (marry) before going away (overseas).
"Darling, can't you see that I'm going overseas
For two, three, four years, don't know how long it will be
So hear, hear my plea, and come marry, marry me
Before it's too late"

Dodie Stevens' "Pink Shoe Laces" could have been the inspiration for the Corporal Klinger character in TV sitcom, MASH.
