Brenton Wood

I just read that Brenton Wood passed away on January 3. I don't know much about him other than his hit "Gimme Little Sign", which I really liked and hit the Top 10 in Toronto in September of '67, alongside The Boxtops "The Letter" and The Ugly Ducklings' "Gaslight".

Re: Brenton Wood

Thanks, Roman. I had read about his passing earlier, but found that many of the articles about his passing referenced his first top 40 hit, "The Oogum Boogum Song" in their headlines instead of "Gimme Little Sign" -- and that several of them went on to state that "Oogum" was a #4 pop hit. I knew that "Gimme Little Sign" was by far his biggest hit -- it reached #9 on the Hot 100 -- and when I looked up "Oogum" I found that it had only reached #34. I've only ever heard it a couple of times over the years, so I figured I'd wait to see if I could find a better article about him later today. However, what I found is that even Billboard's obit, while giving the correct peak positions for his three top 40 hits, still referenced "Oogum" in its headline. They explain its enduring popularity, which I must admit I had been totally unaware of until today, as follows.

Over the years, “The Oogum Boogum Song” has reached new audiences through its inclusion in popular TV shows and movies such as The Umbrella Academy, Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling, among others.
“It’s hard to be in a bad mood after you hear the ‘Oogum Boogum Song,’” NPR wrote in 2023. “Probably not worth the effort.”
“It’s a silly title and has silly lyrics, too. But there’s something about the feeling. That almost playful falsetto, the drums bouncing along, the jangly guitar hits.”

Re: Brenton Wood

I read the Billboard obit article - interesting.  I, personally, think his Gimme Little Sign was better than Oogum Boogum.  I played both back-to-back just to "re-enlighten" the songs in my feeble mind.  I still think Gimme is better and I'm not sure why.  Could be the organ solo in Gimme or it could be the memories - I had just shipped off to U.S. Air Force basic training when Gimme came out and it was hot, hot.  Fond memories often supercede the musicological analysis.  Anyway, despite Wood's brief entry into the charts, his few hits were great.
Kind of interesting that his name, originally, is Brenton Woods and he is credited with that name as the performer, contrasting his songwriter accreditation to his stage name, Alfred Smith.

Re: Brenton Wood

When I was originally looking for an appropriate article to post, I saw that there was some dispute about whether his stage name of Brenton Wood (Alfred Smith being his real name) came from a parish in Louisiana or the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. For what it's worth, Wikipedia states that "Following his high school graduation, Wood enrolled in East Los Angeles College. Soon after, he took the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Brentwood." Didn't see anything about where he got "Oogum Boogum" from, however.

Re: Brenton Wood

Anyone know why Wood titled the song Gimme Little Sign, when that phrase isn't spoken in the song? You'd think it would have been called "Gimme Some Kind Of Sign". Maybe it was too wordy for the 45, or maybe it was shortened for radio purposes?
