The song was the monster hit "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Toni Tennille (of The Captain & Tennille) was in Los Angeles listening to a very famous radio station. She freaked out.
“I remember when I first heard it on KHJ – the biggest top-40 radio station in Los Angeles – while driving down Ventura Boulevard,” she wrote. “When I heard my own voice coming through the speakers, I nearly drove the car off the road. I was so excited that I had to pull over into a service station to compose myself!”
There are more revelations in the article below, including how the group was first exposed to the song, which became Billboard's #1 song of 1975, and where Tennille thinks she got her musical talent.

One other weird thing about "Love Will Keep Us Together." I remember the very first time I heard this song and I knew right away it was going to be a smash hit. I didn't know the official name at the time (although it wasn't hard to guess) and I knew Neil Sedaka wrote it (at the end of the tune, Tennille sings, "Sedaka Is Back," in reference to his new comeback album.)
So when the announcer came on without backselling the title and said "That's the Captain and Tennille," what these teenage ears heard was "That's The Captains and "To Neil." That's why I thought the song was called "To Neil" by a group called The Captains, perhaps paying tribute to the singer-composer.
It didn't take long for me to find out the real name of the group, but boy, was I wrong the first time I ever heard it!
