He was 82, but for those who grew up in the 60s with his goodtime music, he'll always be 18.

The greatest concert I ever attended was the Beach Boys in December, 1977 in Eugene, Oregon. Everything was perfect. It was an old basketball arena which was just right for the acoustics. They brought a violin section. It was at the U. of Oregon campus, so the audience was mostly from California. Best of all, Brian came along for the ride. As a native of Southern California and as an old DJ who played so many of their early hit records on his radio show, I say to Brian, thanks for the music, the memories and the good vibrations you gave us.

As I read about Brian and his passing, I suddenly remembered another Beach Boys story I could share. In 1964, I was doing 6-12 Mid at KXLF, 1370 AM in Butte, Montana. One day, I got a letter from Murray Wilson offering me the Beach Boys for a concert for only $600. If you're wondering why he'd want to set up a date in Butte, keep in mind that in tour miles, Butte wasn't very far from Salt Lake City, which was one of their favorite twice-a-year locales. Sadly, I had no idea how to organize or promote a concert and I certainly didn't have any idea where I could find $600 so I had to pass. I certainly do wish I had kept that letter!
