Gary Puckett: We Sold More Singles In 1968 Than The Beatles

This article is being used to promote The Happy Together Tour in San Diego. But there's some interesting stuff in it, as former Union Gap lead singer Gary Puckett relives his earlier hitmaking days.

He claims that in 1968, when The Union Gap was hitting with such classics as "Woman Woman" and "Lady Willpower," the group outsold the Beatles - although only in singles sales, not albums.

He also recalls how he almost missed the music biz altogether, initially wanting to study medicine. That didn't last long and he decided to give a dose of rock and roll a try instead.

“I was into psychology and thought about maybe getting a medical degree,” recalled Puckett, who spent two years at City College but couldn’t afford the tuition to attend SDSU or UC San Diego. “I was tired of school and truly more interested in music, so I started playing in small bands.”

Gary Puckett sings on at 82: ‘In 1968, we sold more singles than The Beatles’
