Augie Meyers, the 'secret sauce' in Tex-Mex rock 'n' roll, dies at 85

He co-founded both the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados along with longtime collaborator Doug Sahm, and he was particularly known for his distinctive Vox Continental organ sound. I found it interesting to see it described as "a style patterned after the piano triplets of Fats Domino and the pumping sound of a conjunto button accordion" ... I had never realized that there was a connection with Fats' piano playing before, but it does make sense.

Thanks for posting this article, as it offers a good perspective on just how influential Augie was. Doug Sahm, and The Sir Douglas Quintet have always been my favourites, and I had the great fortune of seeing Doug and Augie play the Horseshoe a couple of times in the early 80's, supporting the SDQ's terrific comeback album "Border Wave".  In 1990, when Doug and Augie formed the Texas Tornados with Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez, I was again lucky enough to see them at the 'Shoe, and backstage, after the show, all four signed a poster for me. Sadly, they're all gone now but wow, those memories...
