Mr. Perry's obituary & life story is worth reading.
And you can read some of it in the AP story below. Here's a small sample.
"He was on hand for Harry Nilsson’s “Without You” and The Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited,” Tiny Tim’s novelty smash “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” and the Willie Nelson-Julio Iglesias lounge standard “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.”

The Oldies Music Board » The Paul McCartney Alien Musical That Never Happened » December 10, 2024 3:38 pm |
The former Beatle tried to partner with sci fi pioneer Isaac Asimov for a story about beings from another planet taking over "Wings." But it never happened.
What would you have seen if it had?
“A ‘flying saucer’ lands. Out of it get five creatures. They transmute before your very eyes into ‘us’ [Wings],” McCartney’s original treatment reads. “They are here to take over Earth by taking America by storm and they proceed to do this supergroup style. Meanwhile — back in the sticks of Britain — lives the original group, whose personalities are being used by the aliens…”
Asimov expanded on the story, evolving the alien invaders into “energy-beings” from a dying planet who sought to occupy the Wings members rather than clone them. However, the beings were unable to comprehend human emotions like love, adding a philosophical layer to the narrative."
But Asimov and McCartney couldn't agree on the story line and this craft never landed.

The Oldies Music Board » When Motown Tried - And Failed - To Go Country » December 8, 2024 3:44 pm |
It's a little known tale of how the legendary label took an unsuccessful bucking bronco ride into the world of country music.
"The little-known story of Melodyland — involving a titillating novelty song, an early rock & roll star who tried to go country, and a resolute evangelist who wouldn’t back down — telegraphs country’s crossover popularity. [Berry] Gordy, a titan of Black music, saw the appeal of the genre and leveraged his powerful label to take a shot at Nashville — only to come up with an empty beer glass."

1964 was one of my favourite years for music and the time that almost everything changed with the British Invasion.
I can't say I agree with all these choices, but most were amazing hits and still stand the test of time today. (In fact, they may be a lot better than the stuff that's out today!)

The Oldies Music Board » PBS' American Masters Profiles Brenda Lee » December 3, 2024 12:02 pm |
I stole this from my local radio board, but after seeing the special, I thought it was worth reposting here.
American Masters, the PBS show that highlights famous people, is showcasing the career of Brenda Lee in December. I saw the show last week on my local affiliate and thought it was spectacular. You don't have to be a huge fan of "Little Miss Dynamite" to be amazed at the footage of the 11-year-old appearing on old 50s TV shows and wowing the audience.
The profile contains comments from such power female singers as Pat Benatar, Tanya Tucker and Jackie DeShannon, who all credit Lee with pioneering the way for their careers. There's also some great factoids in the show, including one I still find hard to believe:
It claims Lee is the one artist with the most double sided hits in Billboard history. Is that possible?
In any event, it's well worth a watch, although you'll want to record it to avoid the pledge breaks. Not sure when it's on in your market, but you can, as they used to say, check your local listings. If it's already aired, check for additional airings at off times. It's usually shown several times on different days.

The Oldies Music Board » Surviving Monkee Micky Dolenz's Startling Admission » November 30, 2024 7:37 pm |
In an interview with Cousin Brucie on WABC Radio Nov. 30th, surviving Monkee Micky Dolenz, currently on tour, made an amazing admission.
He was asked if the music thing hadn't worked out what would he have wanted to do.
His answer: "I think I would have liked to be a nuclear physicist!"
Brucie laughed, thinking it as a joke. But it wasn't. Dolenz says he admires Queen guitarist Brian May, who is a nuclear physicist, is fascinated by science and if the Monkees thing hadn't been such a success, he might have gone back to school as a young man to pursue the field.
It did not sound like he was kidding and admitted it's one his regrets that he never got to pursue it.
Or I can say after hearing how earnest he sounded, "I'm A Believer."
The Oldies Music Board » Is This Ex-Beatle The Next Big Country "Starr?" » November 26, 2024 5:56 pm |
First Beyonce went country. Now Ringo Starr? Yep. He's dabbled before, with tunes like "Act Naturally" and "What Goes On" in his Fab Four days.
Now his new album is all about the twang, after he ran into veteran artist T Bone Burnett.
"Starr had been doing a series of EPs with different writers and producers, including a recent release with Linda Perry, and suggested Burnett give him a song for the next one.
Burnett quickly came back with a country tune.
“It was beautiful. The most beautiful song I’ve heard in a long time,” Starr said. He began to think, “I’m going to do a country piece.”
You can look out for "Look Up" when it's released on January 10, 2025.

The Oldies Music Board » Near Mythical Woman Who Inspired A Rock Classic Has Died » November 25, 2024 2:37 pm |
The name Alice Brock probably doesn't mean much to most here, but you would certainly know her name from another source: Arlo Guthrie.
Brock was the inspiration for the title track of his most famous song, "Alice's Restaurant," where as you know, you can get anything you want.
It was Guthrie himself who announced her passing at age 83.
"This coming Thanksgiving will be the first without her," he wrote. "Alice and I spoke by phone a couple of weeks ago, and she sounded like her old self. We joked around and had a couple of good laughs even though we knew we'd never have another chance to talk together."
The 18-minute track has become a classic staple of progressive radio and marked a major milestone in the singer's career. And as the article below indicates, it was all based on a true story - sort of.
Alice Brock, who helped inspire Arlo Guthrie's classic 'Alice's Restaurant,' dies at 83

I always used to get a kick out of the DJ who warned listeners not to sing along with "There's Something Wrong With Me," while their car window was open.
He said if the guy driving beside you didn't know the song, he'd think you were crazy and would probably agree with the title!
The Oldies Music Board » John Lodge Of The Moody Blues Releases New Christmas Single » November 19, 2024 4:14 pm |
The closest I think we ever really got to a Moody's reunion was in 1975, when Justin Lodge and John Hayward released an album under the name The Blue Jays. The main single from the album should have been a bigger hit. It's a great song called "I Dreamed Last Night."

I hadn't heard of anyone from the Moody Blues in years, but I always loved the group's material. Now a true blast from the past has emerged as one of their lead members- John Lodge - is hoping to be back on the charts with a brand new Christmas single.
This "present" for listeners came after Lodge suffered a stroke the previous year and wanted to prove he still had the ability to sing and make music. Have a listen and see what you think of this musical Knight, who's no longer in White Satin.

It's not just a new book. Now there's a brand new Beatles special. It airs on Disney+ on Nov. 29 and is from the same crew who produced the revamped Get Back. "Beatles '64" is a documentary on the Fab Four coming to America for the first time and if you view the newly released trailer below, you'll notice the quality of the long forgotten and in some cases newly discovered video, is breathtaking.
Which prompts the question:

The Oldies Music Board » Innovative Kinks/The Who Music Producer Leaves Final Message At Death » November 15, 2024 9:42 am |
You may not know the name Shel Talmy, but you've definitely heard his music. He's the producer who helped bring The Kinks, The Who and David Bowie to prominence in the 1960s, with an emphasis on a raw guitar sound. He was behind the controls for "You Really Got Me" and "My Generation," among others.
He passed at 87 this week, but left a message behind for fans and family alike. Here's part of his famous last words.
“Please note, that if you're reading this now, this is my final vignette, as I am no longer residing on this plane of existence, and have ‘moved on’, to wherever that may be...
“I’ve had a good run, and I am delighted it lasted as long as it did. I’m also delighted that I am told I have a legacy that will last even longer. I look forward to meeting some of you in the future who are reading this, but LOL, don’t hurry to get here, I’m not going anywhere!”
You can read the entire statement and the story of his life in music at the link below.
“I’d like to think that there's a big studio in the sky”: Shel Talmy, legendary producer of The Who and The Kinks, dies aged 87

When there's no one around.
One of my favorite facts about the song is that it was actually originally recorded in 1967, but once it became a hit in England in 1970, a slightly revamped version was released in the U.S. - where it shot to #1.

The Oldies Music Board » What Song Lyrics Have You Been Singing Wrong All These Years? » October 31, 2024 3:31 pm |
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I've recently discovered I've been singing along to the wrong lyrics to several of my favourite oldies all these years.
Case in point - Rocket Man by Elton John. For some reason, I always heard "Rocket Man - burning down the fields of Avalon," a lyric that made no sense but sure sounded cool. What it actually is should be this: "Rocket Man, burning out his fuse up here alone."
Frankly, I like mine better!
These are called mondegreens and there are some famous ones over the years, like Jimi Hendrix's "S'cuse me while I kiss this guy (kiss the sky)" or CCR's "There's a bathroom on the right (There's a Bad Moon on the Rise.)"
And frankly, no one can sing the wrong lyrics to Israelites by Desmond Dekker & The Aces, because they're almost completely unintelligible.
Is there a song you've been singing along to for years, only to find you were 100% wrong all this time?
