His name was Mike Pinder and he was one of the founding members of the group that had hits with "Go Now" and "Nights In White Satin." Pinder became a master of the Mellotron, and introduced John Lennon to the instrument, leading it to appear on Strawberry Fields Forever.

It was Pinder's voice you hear narrating the poem at the end of the Moody's classic nine-minute long "Satin."

He was 82.

An insightful article from Britain's Telegraph traces the tumultuous life of one the great guitarists who rose out of poverty and into a world of fame, mixed with booze and cocaine - a life that wasn't always Gentle on his Mind.

It's all part of a new album in which artists proceed to duet with a master musician who's been gone since 2017. But getting to those heights of fame wasn't easy.

"Glen Campbell endured the kind of Depression-era poverty that left a permanent mark on anyone who survived it. His father almost didn’t survive it. Unable to provide for his large family, Wes Campbell’s plan to kill himself in nearby woods was derailed only by a bounty of a dozen or so squirrels that he was able to shoot and bring home for dinner."

His name was Dickey Betts and he helped form the Allman Brothers band, along with singing and writing their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man." He also played the guitar solo on the tune, which helped give it its distinctive sound.

"The soaring sound of Betts’ guitar on “Ramblin’ Man” reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. “Ramblin’ Man” was the Allmans’ only Top Ten hit, but Betts’ catchy 7 1/2-minute instrumental composition “Jessica,” recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple."

Betts was battling cancer and heart disease when he passed at age 80.

Say the name Redbone and only one song comes to mind for most: Come & Get Your Love, a Top 10 hit in 1974.

But it turns out that wasn't the song the history-making Native American group wanted the public to hear. It came at a time when what were then termed "Indians" were in the midst of a battle at Wounded Knee, a seminal event in Indigenous history in the U.S. Their choice was a protest song called "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee," a protest song that CBS Records refused to release in America.

So the more gentle "Come & Get Your Love" was chosen instead and it became the only real hit for brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas.  But when it came to 'come and get your royalties,' that was a source of fraternal friction.

"As Pat Vegas tells it, he and his brother worked on "Come and Get Your Love" late one night in Philadelphia, where they were performing a series of gigs. It was finished the next day.

"In his memoir, Pat claims that the song was co-written by the two of them, but that Lolly claimed sole credit for it with the label. He writes that while he was "appalled" and "furious" with his brother, he chose to stay silent, believing that raising a stink would hurt Redbone's reputation. When I asked how the disagreement affected their relationship, he says, "We got over it."

If I can just add a personal reflection on this, a long time ago, the host of a radio show I produced had the great Gene Pitney on as a guest, and he invited phone calls. One of them came from a listener who wanted to know why he never performed "Black Is Black" at his concerts. Pitney then good naturedly explained that it was a common myth that he was the voice on that song, and admitted they did sound alike. Turns out it was Mike Kennedy all along!

The other thing this article does is to confirm something I wasn't sure of. I'd heard for years that the singer on "Black Is Black" didn't speak English and he sounded out the words in order to produce a record that could be played in the U.K. and the U.S. I never entirely believed it, but this story persisted over the years. Now I finally know what I always suspected - it's not true. Kennedy spoke English perfectly well before he moved to Spain. He didn't have to sound out anything and he performed this hit flawlessly.

Remember Los Bravos, a near one-hit wonder with "Black Is Black?" They became one of the only groups from Spain to ever reach the charts in a big way around the world. (It soared to #4 in the U.S. and #1 in Canada.)

The lead singer was a guy named Mike Kennedy and while he was born in Germany, he only achieved fame when he moved to Spain. He was a huge star there and made a lot of money. But as the article linked below indicates, he lost it all due to a narcissistic behaviour that led him to throw away his fame and growing fortune, leaving him near destitute and living in a long term care centre in his adopted country.

He just turned 80 and is looking back at a life that should have gone very differently. A really interesting story on a guy who, while you know the voice, I'm betting most of us couldn't even name.

The song doesn't completely make sense, but that doesn't stop American Songwriter from trying to assign it some meaning. And by the way, that "Detroit radio station" referred to in the piece was actually the legendary CKLW in Windsor, Ont., where equally legendary music director Rosalie Trombley ("The Girl With The Golden Ear") added it to the playlist, and almost singlehandedly turned it into a hit.

“It’s a takeoff on our own stuff,” Cooper says. “Instead of ‘I'm Eighteen,’ it's ‘I'm Thirteen.’ 'School's In.' And ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy' is 'Now, I'm Mr. Nice Guy.' It’s kind of a positive take on the stuff we used to do.”

Rob Halford, the voice of Judas Priest, is featured on a song called “Pleasant Dreams” about overcoming your fear of the dark, while Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-DMC has reimagined Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” as a hip-hop children’s song called “Midday Hour.”

The music was discovered on at least 30 cassettes Gaye recorded as demos in Belgium. And some of them are said to be so good, they could even be hits today.

"Each time a new instrumental started when Marvin started singing, I gave it a number," [lawyer Alex Trappeniers] told the BBC. "At the end when I had listened to all the 30 tapes I had 66 demos of new songs. A few of them are complete and a few of them are as good as Sexual Healing, because it was made in the same time."

One new track above the others makes Alex think we might hear another global hit from Marvin Gaye in the future - just think of the way in which relatively primitive recordings of the Beatles were salvaged and remastered to create their final hit Now and Then.”

The question now is whether the quality is good enough to use after all these years and who actually owns the recordings. Until those issues are settled, we may hear a lot more talk in court than songs on the radio. But the fact there could be "new" Marvin Gaye music all these years later is incredible.

It's Jimi Hendrix, during his time in the U.S. Army. Did he really join the military? As it turns out, no - he was forced to. It was either that or serve time in jail for car theft. He hated every second of it, and was discharged before ever getting close to being deployed to Vietnam. With military MPs nearby, it gives a whole new meaning to All Along The Watchtower!

One of the key musicians behind The Zombies, Rod Argent, claims the boys in the band were simply too young and inexperienced to realize they were being mishandled by record company and music executives. And it's why their careers were cut short.

Also worth noting: most of the still very young group had no idea what a "Zombie" even was. But they took the name anyway.

They also resented being sold to the public as "the intellectual rock group."

"...we were very badly managed, [notes Argent.] We’d only just left school and we’d made “She’s Not There” which everybody loved, and they said, you’ve got to have a press profile. So this photographer took some pictures that we hated, even at the time. And the press needed a story to write. They’d ask, ‘What have you done?’ And we’d say that we haven’t done anything, we had just left school...

"So they put this whole thing out about us being so academic and with these [terrible] pictures, which followed us around. A lot of newspapers, being lazy, would always use the same picture when they did articles on us. Later we had fantastic pictures made but they were never used. Sometimes, even today, some very kind newspaper will dredge up these old pictures and we’ll say, “Aaaahha!”

Despite that, many of the surviving members of the group - including Argent - are still touring and still making music.

She was the love of two of the greatest musicians of the rock and roll era - George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Now, at age 79, Pattie Boyd is literally cleaning house, offering up a plethora of memories for auction at Christie's in London.

The artifacts include rare personal photographs, clothing, books and personal correspondence from the two rock stars to the woman who inspired The Beatles "Something" and Clapton's signature tune "Layla."

Two of the many items are pictured below, including a honeymoon photo of Harrison and Boyd together and a somewhat disturbing letter sent by Clapton asking if Pattie still loved him or was involved with someone else. The pair ended up getting a divorce.

The pic is selling somewhere in the neighbourhood of about $3,000 U.S., while the letter in question will set you back nearly 20 grand.

You can see all of the items on sale here.

My local radio board is highlighting a new format I've never heard of before. The station plays the usual "Greatest Hits," but ICON Radio (aka CKAY-FM) in the Vancouver area does something before those hits get played.

Announcers and often the artists themselves come on to tell the stories behind most of the songs that are about to be played, offering insights about how or why they were written, what happened when they were recorded or performed in concert, how the groups formed or other tales behind the tunes.

It's not for everyone, but I have to admit to some curiosity about it - I love learning "behind the scene" details I never knew about some of my favorite songs and this is what the station is all about for almost every record they play.

If you're curious what this sounds like, you can check it out online here
