What Song Lyrics Have You Been Singing Wrong All These Years?

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I've recently discovered I've been singing along to the wrong lyrics to several of my favourite oldies all these years.

Case in point - Rocket Man by Elton John. For some reason, I always heard "Rocket Man - burning down the fields of Avalon," a lyric that made no sense but sure sounded cool. What it actually is should be this: "Rocket Man, burning out his fuse up here alone."

Frankly, I like mine better!

These are called mondegreens and there are some famous ones over the years, like Jimi Hendrix's "S'cuse me while I kiss this guy (kiss the sky)" or CCR's "There's a bathroom on the right (There's a Bad Moon on the Rise.)"

And frankly, no one can sing the wrong lyrics to Israelites by Desmond Dekker & The Aces, because they're almost completely unintelligible.

Is there a song you've been singing along to for years, only to find you were 100% wrong all this time?

Re: What Song Lyrics Have You Been Singing Wrong All These Years?

At first listen I thought the 3rd verse lyrics in Don't Worry Baby (The Beach Boys) were "I guess I shoulda kept my mouth shut when I saw two bread above my car".  It took several listens to hear "I guess I shoulda kept my mouth shut when I started to brag about my car".

In No Milk Today (Herman's Hermits), the lyrics "But all that's left is a place dark and lonely, a terraced house in a mean street back of town" sounded like "All that's left is a place dark and lonely, a ? (had no idea what the word was) house in a meat street packer's town".

I'm ashamed to admit that the very first time I heard Barry Manilow's "Daybreak" without any announcer giving the title, I swore he was saying "Date Rape."

Now that's a very different song!
