I'm Livin' In Shame - The Supremes
In a college town
Away from home, a new identity I found
Said I was born elite, with maids and servants at my feet
I must have been insane
I lied and said Mama died on a weekend trip to Spain
She never got out of the house
Never even boarded a train

It Never Rains In Southern California - Albert Hammond
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but don't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break, give me a break

Down By The Station - The Four Preps
I said I'm through with one and two
I love you number three
I said I love you number three
And here's what she said to me
Just head on down by the station early in the morning
Catch yourself a trolley car that goes into the sea
I want a love that's true sir, not a love like you sir
You weren't true to one and two
You won't be true to me

The following article is a very nice tribute to Lenny Welch, and has some significant info about him that I didn't know. But one thing that it doesn't mention is that Welch was the first to record a slowed-down version of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", which Neil Sedaka came up with for him after he'd asked Sedaka if he had any songs that would suit his style. It reached #34 on Billboard, and then served as the basis for Sedaka's 1975 version of the song.

Love Is Blue - Paul Mauriat: The way that the record slows down at the end is a very beautiful ending to a beautiful record.
Abraham, Martin And John - Dion: The harp at the end is a perfect conclusion, particularly given the final words of the song.
Hurt - Elvis Presley: Elvis goes for the big finish and nails it.
My Way - Elvis Presley: This had another big finish, but the way that it ends with the words "We'll meet you again, may God bless you, adios" was incredibly poignant given its release a few months after his death. I think I might have read years ago that those words were added in from the end of another song, but even if that was the case I'm still ok with it.
Way Down - Elvis Presley: This time it wasn't Elvis providing the finish, but J.D. Sumner taking his voice way down below the already low notes he'd been hitting at the end of each chorus of the song.
When I'm With You - Sheriff: According to its Wikipedia entry, 'Guinness World Records lists “When I’m With You” as having the “Longest-held vocal note in a US hit single” which “features a note timed at 19.3 seconds” by “lead singer Federico ‘Freddy’ Curci [who] performed the soaring vocal – starting at 3 minutes 26 seconds – on the recording.”'

Isn't it interesting that Sam Cooke's "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha" does not end with a cha Cha Cha but just fades out instead.

Similarly, Bobby Rydell's "The Cha-Cha-Cha" also just fades out. And the biggest cha cha-titled hit of all, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra's "Tea For Two Cha Cha", has a cold ending that doesn't qualify either.

She was recently removed from the Order of Canada, and while no reasons were given for this, it would certainly seem that the Canadian government had looked into the allegations that she is not Indigenous and found them to be very credible. I had waited to see if she would respond to this, but she hasn't, and now she has also been removed from a Canadian Museum for Human Rights exhibit for the same reasons.

Charting in four different decades was an impressive enough achievement, but the way that Robert John did so was particularly noteworthy. He first made the Hot 100 as a 12-year-old in 1958, had to wait until 1968 to do so again, finally had his first top 40 hit in 1972 and his first #1 in 1979, and then had four more songs chart in the 1980s.

His first hit came as lead singer of The Impressions in 1958 with "For Your Precious Love", and he subsequently displayed an imprressive ability to move with the times as a solo artist -- first charting in 1960 with “He Will Break Your Heart”, and continuing to do so on into the 1980s. Always loved his wonderfully smooth voice.

Just heard "Daisy Petal Pickin'" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs recently and thought it could fit here as it's a reworked version of "Sugar Shack". It's also another example of me preferring the second version to the original, although that's at least in part because I've only heard it occasionally over the years ... "Sugar Shack" has become rather burned out for me, whereas despite the similarities I can enjoy "Daisy Petal Pickin'" more because it has a fresher sound.

I listened to Scarlett O'Hara and then the Dallas theme, which I knew but had forgotten. I wasn't really picking up on much similarity, but then decided to listen to Scarlett O'Hara again. This time, with me now being able to think of the Dallas theme as I listened to Scarlett O'Hara, I could hear what you were getting at.

And I can relate to you trying to figure out something like this. Over the years I've often had a new song, or one that's new to me, bring another to mind right away, even if I haven't heard the second song in many years. But if I don't make the connection fairly quickly, but keep hearing the new song because it's a hit, then I'll keep trying over and over but generally won't succeed. So I'm glad that in this case, you were able to eventually figure it out.

Ron had begun his site in 1996, and so a lot of 1980s music was still pretty recent during the early years of the board. And yes, I remember that at one time he would delete posts about post-1970s music, but in his board's latter years I saw that he had stopped doing that.

In recent years, I've also seen that some stations with "oldies" in their names or branding are including 1980s music. And as someone who used to work in market research, that's made perfect sense to me -- that including at least some 1980s music as oldies was good for them from a demographics point of view. So I've also felt that it was good for the board to allow some discussion of 1980s music ... it's a way of making it relevant to newcomers who might not go back as far as many of us do. And personally, I'm actually on the cusp in that regard. Although I've always loved 1960s and 1950s music going back to when I was young, as someone who was born in 1960 I continued to also be into current music right through the 1970s and 1980s.

Finally, Taz's "don't cost nothin'" quote is quite literally true of this site. Not only is it hosted for free by Boardhost, but so far I haven't seen any limit from them on the number of messages that can be posted. If anything, I'd like to see more messages here, and so that also makes me want to be inclusive regarding what can be posted.

I had originally addressed the issue of discussing 1980s music here when it came up in this post, and my answer was a definite yes for a number of reasons. But I'll add that 1980s music is especially relevant when it involves a pre-1980s artist, which is true of "When Smokey Sings", "Bruce", and "Take Me Home Tonight" -- and in the case of the latter two songs, they were also done by artists who had first hit the top 40 in the 1970s.

In the 1980s, there were two top 40 hits with titles referencing another artist who was having a top 40 hit at the same time. In 1984, Rick Springfield's "Bruce" was in the top 40 concurrently with Springsteen's "Born In The USA", and in 1987 ABC's "When Smokey Sings" was a top 40 hit at the same time as Robinson's "One Heartbeat".

When I was originally looking for an appropriate article to post, I saw that there was some dispute about whether his stage name of Brenton Wood (Alfred Smith being his real name) came from a parish in Louisiana or the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. For what it's worth, Wikipedia states that "Following his high school graduation, Wood enrolled in East Los Angeles College. Soon after, he took the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Brentwood." Didn't see anything about where he got "Oogum Boogum" from, however.

Thanks, Roman. I had read about his passing earlier, but found that many of the articles about his passing referenced his first top 40 hit, "The Oogum Boogum Song" in their headlines instead of "Gimme Little Sign" -- and that several of them went on to state that "Oogum" was a #4 pop hit. I knew that "Gimme Little Sign" was by far his biggest hit -- it reached #9 on the Hot 100 -- and when I looked up "Oogum" I found that it had only reached #34. I've only ever heard it a couple of times over the years, so I figured I'd wait to see if I could find a better article about him later today. However, what I found is that even Billboard's obit, while giving the correct peak positions for his three top 40 hits, still referenced "Oogum" in its headline. They explain its enduring popularity, which I must admit I had been totally unaware of until today, as follows.

Over the years, “The Oogum Boogum Song” has reached new audiences through its inclusion in popular TV shows and movies such as The Umbrella Academy, Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling, among others.
“It’s hard to be in a bad mood after you hear the ‘Oogum Boogum Song,’” NPR wrote in 2023. “Probably not worth the effort.”
“It’s a silly title and has silly lyrics, too. But there’s something about the feeling. That almost playful falsetto, the drums bouncing along, the jangly guitar hits.”
