Well the all time classic is the Kingsmen of course and Louie Louie.   Joe Ely starts singing the wrong line , stops and starts again.  According to one account I read, the band had hit it pretty hard the night before and were still four sheets to the wind when they recorded it.  Joe Ely had the words printed and stuck on wall in front of him but suddenly when he starts singing that line, some one tall stepped in front of him blocking his view.   Just adds to the mystery surounding the song and  it is shambolic but it works , more so than if it had been perfect.    As  Richard Dryfuss says as music teacher  Mr Holland in Mr Holland's Opus   "  These guys can't sing, they have no harmonics  , they're playing same chords over and over.   He then says how much  he likes it because it's fun, music is more than notes on a page.

Just looking at 1959, would have thought Here Comes Summer by Jerry Keller would be there but not at all, Three Bells instead.   Somehow can't see that as Summer song.

Just to add  as to the craziness of guy who had me on about Zager And Evans. If he applied the same local stance and this is astounding,,,,, The Archies would be one hit wonders  and NOT for Sugar Sugar. In this country Sugar Sugar never made the Top 40, but Jingle Jangle went Top 10 ! Go figure....

If there is one artist  I would be loathe to label a one hit wonder ( and this creates  all hell let loose when this subject comes up  )  it is Jimi Hendrix.    Technically he is , and he is listed in One Hit Wonders Billboard book but it takes a brave man to mention him.    The leading example of a artist who had heaps of hits outside US and sometimes sanity has to prevail.   An example is when I was taken to task on a NZ board when labelling Zager And Evans one hit wonders as they had another big hit in NZ with Mr Turnkey. Come on,,, there has to be some international base line,  as someone could bring up some artist that had another hit in Turkey, so generally Billboard rules.   When Casey Kasem did his one hit wonders special way , way back Zager and Evans were # 1 as they only hit Top 100 once.  I wonder now if they have been overtaken by Los Del Rios and the Macarena.

Interesting but I have always gone with Billboard's stance,  if you hit the Top 40 once you qualify but a few of these artists are anything but  one hit wonders, discounting the fact they had other big hits in their homelands. Just looking at US,  Archies had another Top 10 with Jingle Jangle,  The Knack had a # 11 with Good Girl's Don't, even  ? and Mysterians just missed the Top 20 with  I Need Somebody,  St Barry Sadler did reach the Top 30 again.  Just because some people only remember the biggest hits they had doesn't make them one hit wonders.

Thinking about Jimmy Soul, there is a line in  a song I love by Sam Cooke that I guess demeans one woman, great lines though  "     Another fella told me he had a sister who looked just fine, instead of being my  deliverance,  she bore a strange resemblence to a cat named Frankenstein "      Classic !

And even then, it almost wasn't a hit. As I understand it, "Let Me Go Lover" only became a smash it after it appeared as part of a CBS play on "Studio One." I think it was the first time a TV show helped to sell a record, and it opened the eyes of executives to the power of the then still-young boob tube. If it hadn't been featured in that show, no one may have ever heard it or at least it certainly would never have been the success it became.

Tragic story, it could have been Ronnie when he was reasearcher for AT40. Sent to do piece on her for One Hit Wonders and found her long term patient at mental hospital.   They didn't annnouce that but worked their way around it delicately.

Waayy back when  Kasey did his Top 40 one hit wonders, # 1 was Zagar And Evans who never hit Top 100 again, let alone Top 40.   In more recent times did   Los  Del Rios ever chart again after Macarena ?

For anyone that knew him from the old board, my mate Jim Barnes,  or Jimbo,  as I called him for 20 years, passed away in June.   Just found out yesterday.    He was compiler of Australian chart books and had a knowledge like no one else of music of that country.     A great man with so much wit and joy of life.   Will be sorely missed by his friends.
Go easy mate !

Interesting that you picked up on punk. The Cars Just What i Needed bsasically steals the intro. Also the lyrics of Yummy Yummy Yummy are interesting. I was exactly  at the age then  those records where aimed  at and of course sailed over my 9  /  10 year old head, I read once that when they were put together the writers would have a real laugh thinking how many double entendres they could throw in there.  From my point of view  have carried them with me from that age and love them all, es 1-2 -3 Red Light which is another one with hidden meaning.

I  would have begun on internet around 2000 as well.  First person I ever had an e  mail from was That Boy John who was a member here. Not long after met  Dennis1947  and his lovely wife  who were    out here on  business.   Was amazed one day to get a phone call  from Gator Rouge, who I think old  timers would remember wasn't the most sociable type.  He had a wonderful intellect  did the Gator,  bless his soul.   Have made many friends such as John,  Linda ,    Wayne and quite a few others.   Don't get here as much as in years gone bye  but still seems to  be  a great collection of very knowlegeable  people.

Fool To  Care by Joe Barry sounded so much like Fats Domino he asked his manager when he recorded it.
Joe Henderson sounded like Brook Benton on Snap Your Fingers.
Barry Young sounded so much like Dean Martin one One Has My Name, a story went around that  Dean had his career scuttled.
