WOW! ok... wait a minute, i'll be back after i'm done ordering this pupster.

gopher,
You used the interesting word "pupster." Can you explain its meaning to me? Is it American slang?
I'm Central European and only self-taught when it comes to English. Does it just mean "a little thing"?

easily done, i hope. except for the "ster" which might be complicated, but may be explained as "one of" perhaps. pup being a young puppy, or new dog (or idea, thing, something of value, of that nature) added to the family, or in this case the family of one's musical understanding and appreciation.

yes, it is slang, if not meant to refer to something new or young in particular, then something of an affectionate nature such as one might have for a puppy most certainly.

hope that helps, or is even remotely enlightening in any sense..

It has not been a kind start to the year for so many 60s and 70s artists. Gary Brooker was the lead singer of Procul Harum and co-writer of the classic "Whiter Shade of Pale," a song whose lyrics I still find unfathomable.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, the 1967 tune was inspired by Brooker's love of classical music.

“About that time, the Jacques Louissier Trio — which had a pianist, bass player and drummer — made an album called Play Bach,” Brooker told Songwriter Universe in 2020. “They were a jazz trio, and they’d start off with a piece of Bach, and they would improvise around it. Louissier had done a fabulous version of what was called ‘Air On a G String’ which was also used in a set of good adverts in Britain.

And all those things came together one morning [on ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’] … a bit of Bach and ‘Air On a G String’ going through my head.”

Brooker was taken too soon by cancer. He was 76.

matthew might argue about front man status, but it's sadness all around indeed.

elvis would make sense. couldn't blow up the package pic to see if that's mentioned there, but otherwise nothing in the amazon advert indicates the occasion. thanks, tom.

it did also mention the doc was "award winning". which one(s), i wonder?

maybe most folks who read free hotel papers happen to be r&b fans?

i don't think the hall's awards were ever intended to be of 'rock'n'roll' fame, per se. the name was, and is, simply a marketing tool. i believe the awards exist, for as much reason as any other, to sell box sets, streams, or whatever other product by any kind of popular act or artist with enough exploitable back catalog to likely merit present commercial attention.

no, not even close. edison made music videos, with sound supplied by his audio recording devices. when motion picture sound was introduced, music video became widely available almost instantly, as "shorts."  and, as far as i can tell, evolution of the medium has little or nothing to do with the media, except in the percieved quality of its presentation.

Very interesting.  I remember the Ventures being the creme de creme of guitar instrumentalists and have several of their early albums.  Seems like, for whatever reason, they kind of faded off into the sunset., with solo guitarists, like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, stealing the spotlights.  I have often wondered what happened to them.  I really enjoyed their music.  Maybe I was "off-base."  The percussion was somewhat de-emphasized, focusing more on the guitars, BUT, I enjoyed the percussion as well.

apparently the ventures have been hiding in your plain sight. looking at their discography, it would appear they never broke up or went anywhere and were active well into the 2000's. a live album from tokyo 2006 is available, and a couple more albums issued until the end of that decade, though i can't say whether those were new or reissue recordings.

Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road Review

i dunno about all that, but the film has been available on my tv cable (suddenlink) pay per view channel for well over a month
now. i watched it, i think it was $6.99, about three weeks ago. mostly real good, if a little too staid in spots. the concept isn't the greatest, as asking wilson questions on a road trip was... well, ya know, brian just isn't always the most engaging conversationalist when he's not singing. well worth watching, however...

I had the good fortune to interview her back in 1980 when she had an album out called Siren. I don't recall much about the record but the title was appropriate as she was hotter than a two-dollar pistol.

i loved the "siren" album. in fact, i cranked it up so loud once that it cracked my living room window. it was produced by genya ravan (ten wheel drive), and featured lots of the better musicians in the nyc punk scene of the time.

much later, i read an interview in which ronnie said she didn't like the album at all, thought it was too noisy and modern sounding; she apparently didn't care for being associated with punk, and also complained of ravan's cocaine use during the sessions.

regardless, it was a really well done album which certainly introduced her to a new audience, if nothing else.

Not being a gopher, it beats me why anyone would question a decision to interview sonny curtis within a couple weeks of the anniversary of February 2 & 3, 1959

aside that sonny had nothing to do with the crickets on dates mentioned, kinda makes sense in that he did work with buddy earlier and is a liviving reference, i now see the tv connection.  aside from his storied past, sonny was a pretty much overlooked songwriter aside from his tv hit.

Since you mentioned Dylan, two songs immediately came to mind. "It Ain't Me Babe" by the Turtles and "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix were two covers that I liked much more than the originals.

there's a whole album of bob covers, mostly if not all songs he did with the band at big pink, called "lo and behold" by coulson, dean, mcguinness, flint. i think their versions surpass anything recorded originally or later by bob, the band, or together in concert..

Happy New Year everyone! Thanks to Tom Diehl for turning me on to oldies online radio station WIWS via Deke Dickerson on Facebook. A lot of the playlist seems to be early 60's, just before I seriously started to tune into radio, but the classic AM sound is very cool. During a spot for the station they mention that they broadcast from "The historic Mclain Building in Beckley West Virginia", and perhaps my underground radio buddy can provide a bit more background.    https://wiwsradio.com/

Interesting information, but useless for me.
Unfortunately, I get an announcement - "This station is unavailable for streaming in your country".

that totally sucks. maybe you could get in touch with p.j. harvey. i believe she has some experience in attempting to rally the united nations. it's an outside broadcast, but what the hey?

With it being a Carole King song, I was a bit surprised when I didn't find more versions ... the only other one shown at https://secondhandsongs.com/work/178662/versions#nav-entity is by Dutch singer Margriet Eshuijs. However, I think that the fact that King didn't record it would have meant that most other artists wouldn't be aware of it, unless they were fans of what Reeves was doing in the 1970s. So that's interesting to know that Moreland did perform it, even if he never recorded it.

i don't know if ace was particularly a reeves fan, but he was a song farmer, and certainly looked for anything he dug, which could work for him... my original copy of the chess lp, "folk festival of the blues" curiously disappeared from his vine st residence during the time, but i'm sure somebody made good use of it, and, no problem, i've got a cd copy now.

Understood, and "fan" might not have been the best word choice there ... a better way of putting this would be to say that I figure anyone knowing of that song back then would likely have found out through it being an album cut by Reeves, and because her album wasn't successful it would have taken some level of awareness of what she was doing at that point. But certainly someone could have brought it to Moreland's attention as a possibility for him as well.

macon radio was, certainly in regard to r&b, not static at the time, a.m. or f.m. it's quite possible ace heard it on the radio. or, somebody could have left martha's record at his house too. who knows? ace tried to get the song around to folks, in any case.
