If being open-minded means being smug, negative and bullyish, then I'll keep laughing at aargh jokes.

A. I wonder if Neal Packman would have recognized Jagger had he been there.
B. I wonder if Neal Packman would have approached Jagger and what might he say.

I can't remember how to post a video, so I'll just name the artist...

How about Deodato's version?

"Do You Believe In Magic" is a great song.  Such a classic that holds up to time.

The Oldies Music Board » Supremes » September 19, 2021 4:52 pm

Lorne, I feel using the Supremes name was detrimental to the group.  It's like a TV show where one of the stars leaves.  They may replace that star, but it never seems the same after that.  I think Motown should have renamed them and retired the name Supremes.  I feel the group may have had a chance starting anew.

The Oldies Music Board » Supremes » September 19, 2021 1:56 pm

A simple question:

After Diana Ross left the Supremes,  do you think the survivors, and any add-ons would have had more success if they would have started afresh with a new name, without suggesting they were ex-Supremes?

As usual, your writing is very clear. It's an interesting version of this song, and I decided to try seeing if I might find it on YouTube by searching on "If I Had A Hammer" "jazz" and "instrumental", but none of the versions that came up were this one. I also tried doing the same with the song's alternate title, "The Hammer Song", but still didn't find anything.

I tried searching "Hammer Time", but that took me down a different path altogether.

Why do I suddenly have the urge to buy Command hanging strips?

While a third grader,  I found an old radio in our attic and started listening to it.  "A Little Bit Of Heaven" was one of the hits at the time.  I loved that song and used to turn the dial to keep finding it.

This thread inspired me to go back to the archive.org website to dig up a snapshot of the old board. I was surprised to find that you could actually view most of the posts. Bit of nostalgia for those of us who contributed at the time. I think this particular thread featured some of the last Packman postings.

Yeah, that turned out to be a problem for me.  My first post, I looked around and it seemed most people were using their first name for their user name so I used mine, “Ron”.  When I found that user name was already in use, and by the moderator of all people, I started using Taz.

I don’t know when I first came here.  I was trying to identify a song I thought the name of was “Sea Shell Sherry”, but I wasn’t sure how Sherry was spelled and I didn’t know the artist,  I posted some of the lyrics, which turned out to be only the choruses.  I stumped the board the first couple of times but eventually found out it was by Jerry Keller about the time the CD came out.

Same here, me starting with a name.  I also used my first name.  I posted for some time until another Karen posted.  Uh oh.  It's funny, but you are owners of your words and don't want others to be confused or wonder why you said such a thing or why does she come off so differently?   So I changed my name to It's me Karen, as in, hey guys, it's me!  Karen!  I eventually dropped the apostrophe because many times when I was typing, my pinkie finger would accidentally reach too far and hit enter.  Then I'd have an unfinished post sent.

As for "Sea Shell Sherry", I absolutely remember that.  I also tried to research, to no success.

Sorry I ruined that for you.

I think you misunderstood me.  I still have the goal, a personal goal, to be the first to answer a particular song before others do.  mroldies' songs are truly difficult.  To be able to answer first (or be the only one) would be an achievement.

Good job on answering one.

I didn't get on the internet myself until 1998, which was also when I first started visiting the board. But it's kind of ironic that back then I felt that the level of expertise that I saw from the regulars was so much greater than mine, that I didn't post for months and wasn't sure how much I ever would. My confidence level has obviously increased a bit since then.

I remember the same.  Actually, I still have these feelings.  I've always been good for a memory of a song in my life or what my favorite song by an artist is.

Thank you, Karen. The fact that I had done this certainly crossed my mind when Flo suggested that it would be good if I could set up a new board. And even though Ron never posted here, he did register and so at least he saw that a part of what he had created on the old site was continuing. But full credit is also due to all the contributors like yourself who helped keep things going here as well.
It also just occurred to me that we might be coming up for a significant anniversary relating to when the board started, and we are ... according to what's at the bottom of the page that's been archived at https://tinyurl.com/dfd8y68, the 25th anniversary will be on Nov. 2.

That was a few years before my time.  I believe I started posting in early 2000.   Message boards were new to me then.  Heck, the computer was new to me then!

The Oldies Music Board » Is ABBA Making A Comeback After Nearly 40 Years? » September 2, 2021 3:40 pm

I like the song.  It doesn't have enough of that great harmony that I love in ABBA, but still, it's good and the singing is still good.

Thanks for sharing that, Lorne.  You should be proud that Ron trusted you to cover for him.  It was only natural that you take over this board.  Thanks for doing that.  And yes, I miss Ron very much.

I'm sorry that Ron Smith, who ran the Oldies Music Bulletin Board that was the predecessor to this one, didn't live to see this, as he lived in the Chicago area and worked in Chicago radio for many years. And I think that partly because of what he had to say about Chicago-area artists on the former board, it didn't surprise me that they were able to come up with an impressive list of inductees ... I've become aware of many other possibilities over the yearsas well. So this is great to see.

I miss Ron.  One thing that I think about from time to time was when he informed us that there was really was no east side of Chicago, as the lyrics in "The Night Chicago Died" implied.

Roman’s reference to Liona Boyd’s romantic relationship with current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s father, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, brings to mind a current situation with former California governor Jerry Brown.

As we all know, Jerry Brown had a long-term romantic relationship with Linda Ronstadt starting in the early Seventies.  Jerry Brown married Anne Gust in 2005.

Jerry Brown was very recently asked who his favorite singer was and he answered Linda Ronstadt (who else could he have said?).  I am just wondering how that answer went over with Jerry Brown’s wife.

i welcome correction, but i believe jerry brown was not married when, quite in public as i recall, he  was dating ronstadt. no idea what p.t.'s status was however for that natter, nor do i care..

Pierre was married at the time but it certainly wasn't the only time he stepped out on Mrs. T., as there are well documented affairs with Barbra Streisand and Margot Kidder as well. Of course Mrs. T. was no choir girl either as she went to the Stones El Mo show in '77 and allegedly had a fling with one or more of the boys afterwards. My money would be on Bill Wyman, who was apparently a notorious skirt chaser.

I can't find anything to back this up, but I remember hearing several years ago, Led Zeppelin's "Going To California" was about Margaret Trudeau.

When I hear a song on a TV commercial that I want to jog my memory about, I'll watch it on YouTube. I find that many people, a lot young and curious from the commercial,  googled the song to listen to its entirety.   Almost always, the comments are positive about the song.

My 30 year old son loves to listen to oldies.
