Too many years of music to compare. Comparing the music of today to the music of yesterday is like comparing apples to oranges.

The Oldies Music Board » Steve Miller Shares the Stories Behind His Greatest Hits » September 28, 2023 11:43 am |
Thanks aflem. Another great article. Both of these articles show what so many of the artists in the 70's and 80's went through to get on the radio and achieve success. It was years of playing here, there and everywhere and not being sure where or how far they would go. Through it all they looked for the hook, lick or song that would propel them on to the radio and greater success. A couple of other groups that come to mind with great stories like that are Hall & Oates and Huey Lewis and the News. John Oates book "Change of Seasons provides a great look into how H&O started in the early 70s and worked their buns off before they became mega stars in the 80s.

The Oldies Music Board » Al Stewart's Year Of The Cat Was Originally About A Suicidal Comedian » November 23, 2022 9:50 pm |
I just found another video. It's one of the "reaction" videos where young people listen to a song for the first time. This is three guys listening to Year of the Cat and watch their reactions!! I share their enthusiasm. I wish I can remember exactly what I felt the first time I heard the song. I know I instantly liked it because I went out and bought the album the next day!
The Oldies Music Board » Al Stewart's Year Of The Cat Was Originally About A Suicidal Comedian » November 23, 2022 7:45 pm |
I love Year of the Cat - one of my favourite songs. I've seen a number of interviews with Al Stewart and he always comes across as such an amiable person. And I love his laugh!! I found another video interview of Al in which he and Alan Parsons talk about Year of the Cat and how Al didn't initially like the idea of the sax solo in the song.
The Oldies Music Board » Is This The Most Iconic Motown Song Of All Time? » October 30, 2022 5:04 pm |
Now I know this song will never be on a list of Motown greats but whenever I hear it, the song screams Motown more than any other for me. That song is Fingertips by Stevie Wonder. It might not have the "soul" of many of the Motown greats, but when it comes to raw energy that one does it for me. And speaking of Marvin Gaye, that's him on the drums!!

The Oldies Music Board » Is This What John Lennon Would Have Looked Like At 82? » September 29, 2022 8:50 pm |
That rendering is totally believable. I thought that in the movie Yesterday an aged John was rendered very well. I remember seeing him and gasping at how shockingly realistic he looked.

The Oldies Music Board » Who's Not In The Rock Hall Of Fame That Should Be? It's A Long List » February 12, 2022 9:47 am |
Eminem is nominated for the RRHOF. How is Eminem rock n roll? He's not, as are a number of other rappers already in the hall and others who aren't remotely rock n roll. Call it the Music Hall of Fame if you wish, but it's not even close to being the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame anymore.
The Oldies Music Board » America's Drummer Willie Leacox passes » February 2, 2022 5:10 pm |
Willy Leacox, the drummer for the band America for 41 years, passed away at his home in Stockton, CA this week at the age of 74. He was first heard playing with America on their 4th album, Holiday. He was one great drummer.
The Oldies Music Board » Better Than The Original » January 7, 2022 4:46 pm |
Since you mentioned Dylan, two songs immediately came to mind. "It Ain't Me Babe" by the Turtles and "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix were two covers that I liked much more than the originals.

The Oldies Music Board » Beach Boys, Chicago, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang on July 4th special » June 28, 2021 7:55 pm |
As much as I like many of the performers, I have found on many of the special day event shows, the music is usually pre-recorded and lip-synced. I have absolutely hated lip-sync ever since I was a kid. A lot of the performances are also kitschy and schmaltzy and for me, downright impossible to watch. If I watch anything on July 4th, it will be the Hall and Oates Liberty concert from July 4, 1985. Now that was a concert!!

that's really great. if you came up past those surf drum disco platters, i can see how hawkins would have brought something meatier to your attention.
i'm wondering, though, in light of your attraction to hawkins, what, if anything, did you make of al jackson? too thin, perhaps? or, had jackson passed before you picked up on him or hawkins?
To be perfectly honest, I was never a true student or follower of specific drummers. (I was never a that great drummer either. I just enjoyed playing them and being in the local garage bands!) I only knew of Hawkins from Aretha's Greatest Hits album because his picture and name was on the album and I wore out the grooves listening to it. That is how I remember him. I also became aware of Hal Blaine when I first saw his name on one of my Fifth Dimension albums. As for Al Jackson I didn't know about him until I just read his bio on Wikipedia because you mentioned him and obviously he was a great drummer. If I'd had a Booker T & the MGs album I might have learned about him sooner!

The Oldies Music Board » The 2021 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees Are... » May 12, 2021 7:07 pm |
Yes, it's nice to see Carole and Tina get in, but I'm no longer a fan of the Hall. The list is massive of deserving artists who are not in the Hall let alone not even being nominated. Right now IMHO the R&RHOF has about as much relevance and credibility as a Rolling Stone top 100 list.
The Oldies Music Board » Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Go-Go’s Lead List of Rock Hall Nominees » February 12, 2021 10:15 pm |
The fact that it took this long for Carole King to be nominated (unbelievable that she's not already in) demonstrates what a farce the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is.

The Oldies Music Board » Mystery song » January 3, 2021 10:04 pm |
Bravo to the power of the Internet!! So glad I could hear the whole song. I really like it. In fact I like a lot of the music on his web site. He wrote some very fine songs. Too bad he didn't get the big break that some of the others in his day got. I think his music would have fared well on the charts if he'd had a bit of promotion.
The Oldies Music Board » Study: Your favorite pop songs likely trace from when you were 14 » January 3, 2021 5:17 pm |
Interesting study, though for me my favourite music was in 1963 through 1965 from age 10 to 12. I think a lot of what made an impression on me as much as the music was the medium I was hearing it on. The excitement of radio reflected the excitement of the music, or maybe vice-versa. And of course in 1964 the Beatles were a huge influence in the music I enjoyed. By the time I was 14 in 1967 I'd say my musical tastes were definitely maturing as I think was much of the music.
