That Sunday That Summer - Nat King Cole
My Summer Love - Ruby and the Romantics - and favorite of all
Lazy Summer Night - Four Preps.

As for Summer Place, I prefer the divine vocal by the J's with Jamie.

I was thinking about this the other day and find it weird that my favorite summer songs are all Easy Listening.

Not a very big Jerry Lee fan, but I have to put this one on here, because I just loved the SHITt out of it.

I kinda knew what my reaction would be, but thought I should read it at least.  Just reinforces everything I've known for years.  This is exactly why I got so deep into country during that period.  Of these 50, the only ones I would listen to were Otis Redding, Johnny Cash, Nick Drake,  And give the Beach Boys honorable mention, because they at least seemed normal.  I'm not too familiar with Otis' albums, but I would hope there is a better one than this. It just bothers me that someone as supremely talented and unique as Otis Redding would waste his time on such mainstream fluff as My Girl.  So flame away.  I can take it, because I know what I like.

Good grief, what was I thinking?  How did I leave out Aaron Neville?  And I'm surprised no one's mentioned Tony Williams. Another great voice - Charlie Rich.

I have no idea about the music videos.  But I do feel strongly about this - he would have gone on to be the most successful of the three.  There are many ways to be successful,  In addition to his own songs, he already had two major hits under his belt as a writer - White Lightning and Running Bear.  He was in Beaumont, Texas, as were George Jones and Johnny Preston.  So if he had just gone back to Texas and radio, and kept writing, and his friends would have recorded everything he wrote.who knows, he could have ended up in Harlan Howard territory.

As for videos, I've been surprised lately, seeing clips from Dick Clark's Saturday Night Show, how so many of the performances seemed to be forerunners of today's videos.

Well, it was only one song, so I figured it might not count.  It certainly doesn't show his capabilities, you should probably hear Danny Boy or Night Life.  Marty Robbins also had a great voice, and quite a few crossover hits - perhaps the most versatile singer ever.

Here are a couple more great voices - Arthur Prysock.
And  another guy who had only one hit here, but a lot of them internationally - Frank Ifield.  Listen to The Summer is Over, or for real effect, he does an incredible version of Roy's' Crawling Back.

Who would you nominate as having the best male voice, (solo or lead singer of a group) in the rock/pop era (50s, 60s, early 70s)?   I'm thinking in terms of pure singing voice, considering characteristics such as pitch, tone, resonance and range.

My nominees would be:

Roy Orbison
Jay Black
Johnny Maestro

Cannot argue with that list!   Roy's my first thought, too.  So glad to see someone recognize Johnny Maestro, what an incredible singer.  Probably never sang a bad note in his life.

B.J. Thomas certainly had a great voice.  And I know this falls outside the area, almost no one could out-sing Ray Price.

Wow, you can always learn something.  I thought it was David Briggs who played on Anna, but it was Pig.  The piano really made that record.

The great songwriter Dallas Frazier has died.  I can't find it on media, but his daughter posted it on Facebook, and so did David Frizzell.  This upsets me so much, I've been championing him for so long, and the Country Music Hall of Fame keeps passing over him.  They have a crazy rule that they only induct a songwriter every five years.   And if they'd only do a BMI Repertoire Search (anybody can do this)  you would hope they would recognize their mistake. They can start in 1960 withh Alley Oop and go through forever  - with beautiful songs like There Goes My Everything,   and back to novelties like Mohair Sam and Elvira.   He did it all over 50 or more years, and nobody cared???

Not too many, but mine always seem to come down to duets
David Houston and Tammy Wynette - Something Stupid - just gorgeous
Conway Twitty and Sam Moore  - Rainy Night in Georgia
Lou Christie and Darlene Love - Summer Nights
As for It Ain't Me Babe, I prefer Johnny Cash
And it seems a bit surprising, but you haven't lived until you've heard Johnny Maestro sing Lonely Teardrops

Really sad to hear that.  He was great.  He had also given up secular music and became a minister.  His album "This Story Must Be Told"  was without doubt the best secular to Christian transition ever.  It was a masterpiece.

Great idea, and probably nobody better to do it than Lou Christie.  He has a BUNCH of songs that fit in there.  I'll be interested to learn which ones he thinks should have been hits.

Well, bummer.  I can't access the site.

I can't believe I subjected myself to all this crap.  It was so awful and I should have known it, but there were a few bright spots.   The one that made me smile was Sittin On the Dock of the Bay, because I felt it should be way up there, and had heard a lot of people saying it was one of the great records of all time.  But it at least it came out in the top 50, as it should.. Was hoping for You've Lost That Lovin  Feelin and Pretty Woman, but they appeared to move on from there.

Marion Worth's Shake Me I Rattle sure sounded like Patti Page, as did Betty Johnson's Winter in Miami.  And Jamie by Eddie Holland sounded like Jackie Wilson.

NO NO NO NO NO!!   Not Lloyd!!!  The first love of my life, my 12 year old crush,  He had a pretty active Facebook page, but I had noticed he had been quiet of late,  Of course, you know, when anyone gets to that age, that something unpleasant could happen at any time.  But I sure wasn't expecting it.  I'm devastated.
